Pennywise might only come around to feast on the children of Derry every 27 years, but that doesn’t mean we have to wait that long in between seasons. We loved Welcome to Derry. Despite the show’s massive viewership success, it has not been officially greenlit for season two yet. We’re really not worried though. Speaking with Deadline, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Casey Bloys assures us that the Stephen King-inspired series is “not in limbo at all.”

“It was a huge success for us,” Bloys states. “And Andy [Muschietti] and Barbara [Muschietti] are hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season. I would happily do it. One of the challenges is, there’s not a book that you’re basing it on, so it’s invention. They want to make sure that they have a story they’re excited to tell. So it’s not limbo other than they need to land on something they’re excited by creatively. We’ll be there.”
Plenty of great shows are guilty of making us wait an obscene number of years between seasons (*cough cough* Stranger Things). It’s hopeful to hear that the creators of Welcome of Derry are keen to jump into development of the story’s next chapter right away.
What will the next chapter of Welcome to Derry be about?

Welcome to Derry is developed by Andy and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. Fuchs also showruns with Bradley Caleb Kane. They have confirmed seasons two and three will jump back in time to 1935 and 1908, respectively. The violent events associated with those years—the Bradley Gang massacre in downtown Derry and the Easter egg hunt explosion at Kitchner Ironworks—will be the focus. Both bloody events are referenced in the creepy opening title sequence.
Though the future of Welcome to Derry is all but confirmed, we have a pretty clear direction of where it’s headed. All that’s left to do now is wait. Thankfully, it sounds like we’ll see that little red balloon floating along for season two soon enough.
