What THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Meant for THE MANDALORIAN Season 3

It wasn’t a surprise that The Book of Boba Fett had direct connections with The Mandalorian. Nor was it shocking when Din Djarin appeared on the spinoff series. But no one expected Boba Fett’s own show to also deliver season two and a half of The Mandalorian. The Book of Boba Fett fundamentally changed everything about Mando and Grogu’s own story. If you didn’t watch it, you’ll be lost when The Mandalorian returns for its third season on March 1, 2023. So whether you need a reminder or a crash course, here’s everything you need to know before we rejoin the galaxy far, far away’s best duo.

How The Mandalorian Season Two Ended

The Mandalorian‘s second season ended with Luke Skywalker saving the day and taking Grogu from Din. The bounty hunter wanted to return the Child to his own “people,” the Jedi, and Luke answered the call Grogu put out from the ancient Jedi Temple on the planet Tython. It was an emotional farewell, but one Din believed best for his fellow Foundling.

It also appeared to be the safest way to keep Grogu safe from former Imperial officers like Moff Gideon. And it meant Grogu would be free of developing issues among Mandalorians themselves. Din Djarin has become the rightful holder of the Darksaber. But while he didn’t want the famed laser sword, Bo-Katan refused to take it from him. She must win it in battle if she wants to reclaim it and lead her people once more.

What The Book of Boba Fett Revealed About Mandalore the Darksaber

The Book of Boba Fett provided further insight into both Mandalore and the famed Mandalorian Jedi weapon, the Darksaber.

Mandalore stands in ruins after the Empire bombed the planet during the Great Purge. It scattered the few surviving Mandalorians around the galaxy, though Din was able to find his own tribe again. Unfortunately for him the Armorer banished him from the Tribe for breaking their code by removing his helmet and letting another see his face. He can only earn redemption in the living waters of Mandalore.

Din does carry the Darksaber, though, the weapon that could potentially reunite all of his people. But other Mandalorians like Bo-Katan despise the Children of the Watch, the group of zealots that raised Din in their ways.

Luke took Grogu to train on  Ossus, the planet where the Master was beginning to build his own Jedi Temple. (Hope that goes well for him!) Ahsoka Tano was also there when Din Djarin arrived with a tiny Beskar steel chainmail shirt made by the Armorer. Ahsoka didn’t let the bounty hunter give the gift to Grogu directly, so. Din left without seeing his little buddy. But Luke Skywalker did not just hand it over to Grogu, either.

Master Luke gave his Padawan a choice. Grogu could refuse the armor and remain with Luke to continue training as a Jedi. Or Grogu could take the chainmail and return to Din Djarin.

Grogu took the chainmail and reunited with Din in The Book of Boba Fett‘s season finale. The green tyke arrived while Din was helping Boba Fett in his battle to control Tatooine. Grogu also helped save the day by using the Force when he bravely faced down Boba Fett’s rancor and saved Din. The pair then left the planet on Din’s new ship, a modified N-1 Naboo starfighter with a seat made just for Grogu.

What Luke Skywalker Revealed About Grogu’s Past

Grogu’s time with Luke was brief but revealed much about Grogu’s past. The Book of Boba Fett revealed Grogu was at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant during Order 66. (Though we have no idea who saved him from the massacre.) And while Grogu’s training with Luke didn’t last long, that might not matter. Luke told Ahsoka it was less that he was teaching Grogu and more that Grogu was remembering things he already knew.

Grogu might have given up his life as a Jedi Padawan, but he might already know everything he needs to become a Jedi Master. And since he is also a Mandalorian Foundling, he could have the power to one day unite all Mandalorians.

What Awaits Din Djarin and Grogu During The Mandalorian Season Three

We know Palpatine’s secret cloning program will work one day. We also know his scientists, like Dr. Pershing, will successfully create Snoke in a lab. And that might all be possible because of Grogu’s blood, which Moff Gideon no longer has.

Civil war is also brewing once again among Mandalorians, an issue on full display in the show’s first season three trailer. The Darksaber in Din Djarin’s possession puts him and Grogu right in the middle of Mandalore’s problems.

And, of course, the New Republic’s early days also mark the slow rise of the First Order. Events that take place during The Mandalorian‘s third season will almost certainly impact the future of the galaxy far, far away. Just as the middle of The Book of Boba Fett did when it suddenly turned into a mini-season of The Mandalorian.
