HELLBOY’s Angel of Death Comes to Life in This Intense Costume

What does it take to make a creature that represents Hellboy‘s personal death? Glad you asked because Amanda shared details of making her seven foot replica of the Angel of Death from Hellboy II: The Golden Army. She spent about three months constructing the scary costume, but since Amanda’s been cosplaying for over 25 years, she’s no stranger to tackling big projects.

Amanda used fun foam craft sheets to make the Angel of Death’s body parts and sewed the robes from gold crushed velvet fabric and black lace. As lovely/creepy as the Angel of Death’s body parts are (that’s not a phrase I say often), the real draw of the costume is the wings.

In order to make them wearable, Amanda had to consider weight and movement. She told Nerdist, “The wings are extremely lightweight, weighing only about five pounds total. They’re supported in a backplate that I made from a cookie tray I purchased from Goodwill. They are jointed and bend and extend with nothing more than fishing line and springs, and they also flap back and forth, since I have them attached to my upper arms. They’re quite sturdy, comfortable to wear, and light enough that they don’t make me feel off balance.”

And the details. Guys. Each wing has about 350 feathers.

Do you cosplay or take photographs of cosplayers? Then I want to see your work so we can talk about highlighting your creations in a future Cosplay Friday gallery. If you’re a photographer, maybe we could focus on your images from a single convention. If you’re interested, please get in touch with me at alratcliffe@yahoo.com and send photos you’d like me to feature–the more high-res the photos, the better. Be sure to provide credits for the cosplayers or photographers for each image because giving credit is good manners–bonus points if you include links to relevant Facebook pages or websites. Though I wish I knew all the nerdy franchises, I don’t, so please let me know who or what is being cosplayed.
