Two DC Comics TV series will end soon. HBO Max has canceled both Titans and Doom Patrol, we learned via The Hollywood Reporter. Both series will end with their current fourth seasons. With all the recent shake-ups at DC Entertainment and HBO Max, it’s not surprising to see these two shows wrap. Those behind-the-scenes were apparently not surprised either, as creatives wrote the second halves of their fourth seasons (the first halves have already aired) to intentionally end the series and conclude lingering story arcs.
Titans and Doom Patrol are not only ending at the same time in the same way—they began in the same way, too. Both series were connected to the short-lived DC Universe streaming service. The shows moved from DC Universe to HBO Max when the streaming service shut down.
Titans focused on the superhero team of the same name with characters such as Dick Grayson (Robin), Kory Anders (Starfire), Teagan Croft (Raven), and more. Doom Patrol centered on that misfit team, bringing it together as a disfunctional, perverse, but also kind of sweet family. Both shows have ensemble casts that brought their offbeat characters to the screen with flair. I’m already missing Cliff Steele’s (voiced by Brendan Fraser) angry cursing.
Then again, I’ll get more time with the Doom Patrol and Titans crews. I’m happy they will both receive proper endings instead of abrupt cancellations.
Titans executive producer Greg Walker said, “We have six episodes left to unleash upon the world that we hope will give our beloved characters the creative closure we all know they deserve.” He also expressed gratitude for everyone who helped the show happen.
Doom Patrol showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver shared, “To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons. Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.”
