HARPOON Trailer Brings Meta-Humor to “Boat Horror”

You might not have heard much about Harpoon yet, but that is about to change. Below is the hilarious first trailer for the teens-on-a-boat horror, which was recently picked up at Cannes Film Festival by Epic Pictures. We’re happy to exclusively reveal this super cool and silly teaser that pokes fun at the nature of trailers whilst showcasing what looks to be an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride.

The indie horror comes from writer/director Rob Grant and stars Munro Chambers from the cult hit indie flick Turbo Kid alongside Emily Tyra and Christopher Gray. According to Epic, “Harpoon is a black comedy about the rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension that arise when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean.”

All of that is clearly showcased here as the three friends fight, flirt, and permanently injure one another under the dulcet tones of Brett Gelman’s narration, which itself questions the legitimacy of movie pull quotes and declares that Harpoon is the “best boat movie ever.” Even better than Titanic!

There’s a little pool of brilliant boat-based horror movies—for instance, Phillip Noyce’s 1989 movie Dead Calm, which stars Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill, and Oliver Blackburn’s 2008 film Donkey Punch—and we have a feeling that Harpoon will be adding a self-aware meta-humor to that mix that’ll likely go down very well with contemporary audiences.

All in all, it looks like a whole bunch of silly, scary fun and we cannot wait to see more as the film heads closer to release. For now, though, we’ll take inspiration from Harpoon and start making up pull quotes for our own work, beginning with this article, which is very clearly the “Best Article Ever,” and Nerdist, which is according to sources is “The Most Popular Website to Have Ever Graced the Internet.”
