Gwyneth Paltrow Didn’t Know She Was in SPIDER-MAN

One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-The Avengers is the penchant for random characters to cameo in movies that aren’t their designated franchise. Think Doctor Strange showing up in Thor: Ragnarok or Falcon in the first Ant-Man. The best extended use of this happened in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The first movie in the shared Sony/MCU Spider franchise really wanted you to know it was in the MCU. Tony Stark is basically the second lead, and Happy Hogan and even Captain America pop up. But the ending of the movie brought in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts for a lovely reunion with Stark following their offscreen breakup before Captain America: Civil War. It’s just a shame Paltrow doesn’t remember doing that.

In one of the most enjoyable things on the internet today, Jarrett Wieselman snipped out a clip from Favreau’s new Netflix cooking show, The Chef Show. In it, Favreau talks about coming up with the idea for the series while shooting Homecoming. And for the life of her, Paltrow doesn’t realize that’s the movie in which that scene occurred.

Paltrow seems genuinely delighted to learn a scene she must have thought was for some Avengers movie actually appears in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It’s even more hilarious than when Tom Holland admitted he thought the ending of Avengers: Endgame was a wedding. And in fairness to Ms. Potts, Marvel probably has people come in all the time. No one’s ever sure where that scene could end up. The mid-credit scene of Captain Marvel with Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Don Cheadle was clearly shot for Endgame. That’s part of the fun of the MCU!

At any rate, it’s just really fun that these movies can surprise even the people in them.
