There are a few things that differentiate a good anime from a great one. Compelling narrative, striking visuals, emotional or thematic payoff: these are all things that matter. Among the greats, Ghost in the Shell is one such example that continues to leave a lasting impact. As of today, fans of the franchise have something exciting to celebrate. Prime Video revealed Thursday that a new Ghost in the Shell anime, titled The Ghost in the Shell, is heading to the platform.
The news was announced at the streamer’s first ever International Originals showcase in London. It comes as part of Prime’s 2026 Asian content lineup. Along with the cyberpunk series, Prime also presented a few other titles slated to join the platform this year. That includes the Korean drama Human x Gumiho (working title), a supernatural romance starring Jun Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun) and Ji Chang Wook, and an Indian film from producer Alia Bhatt.
The Ghost in the Shell will stream exclusively on Prime Video come July of this year. Science SARU, the animation studio behind Inu-oh and Dandadan will produce the series. The Ghost in the Shell is a massively influential series. Set in a 2029 cyberpunk metropolis, it explores the intersection of humanity and technology in an interwoven world. Prime’s series takes on a bold new art direction, moving away from the 1995 film and closer to the original manga.
The explosive franchise began with Shirow Masamune’s 1989 manga. Since then, Ghost has expanded across anime, live-action film, and video games. Apart from the 2017 Scarlett Johansson live-action reboot (which did not perform well), the franchise has maintained its status as a foundational member of the cyberpunk genre.
The Ghost in the Shell has not gotten a new series since Netflix’s Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 that ran from 2020 to 2022 (a series that did worse than the 2017 movie). With Science SARU fronting the latest reboot, fans have a truly promising venture to look forward to. Prime Video’s The Ghost in the Shell series streams worldwide in July 2026.
