“ Barbenheimer” might have been the biggest movie story of 2023, but they aren’t the only films looking to have a big night during Hollywood’s most prestigious event in 2024. The 96th Oscar nominations are here, and while Oppenheimer and Barbie are up for many Academy Awards each, other critical darlings are too. Poor Things, American Fiction, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, and The Zone of Interest will also be looking to take home lots of gold statues. Here is a breakdown of 2024’s Oscar nominations, with a full list of award hopefuls below.
Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid got up bright and early to names this year’s Academy Award nominees from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The 2024 Oscar nominee announcements included many surprises (both good and bad), but it was no surprise when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led the way with 13 nods. His atomic bomb epic was followed closely by another film, just not its de facto release partner Barbie. Greta Gerwig’s film got a less-than-expected eight, including snubs for both the Barbie director and the film’s star, Margot Robbie. Instead, it was Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things that garnered the second most nominations with 11.
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of The Flower Moon was next with ten. Each of those movies is also up for 2024’s Best Picture Oscar, along with The Holdovers, American Fiction, Maestro, Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest. As expected the Best Actor category looks like a battle between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers. Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Lily Gladstone and Poor Things‘ Emma Stone are considered the favorites for Best Actress.
Genre fans had reason to celebrate, as well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is up for 2024’s Best Visual Effects Oscar alongside Godzilla Minus One, The Creator, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. (Napolean rounds out the group.) Two Avengers will compete in Best Supporting Actor, as Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo both will be up for the award. And Best Score will see two Star Wars composers vying against one another. The legendary John Williams earned yet another Academy Award nomination, this time for his work on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. As did The Mandalorian theme song composer Ludwig Göransson, who was recognized for Oppenheimer.
