We at Nerdist are big fans of Thor, and are always here for more God of Thunder content. Lucky for us, Marvel’s main man in charge Kevin Feige agrees. At San Diego Comic-Con this year, we finally learned more about the fourth Thor film at the Marvel Cinematic Universe panel. In a sea of new announcements, one thing was clear: Thor 4 is going to rock our socks off. Here’s everything we’ve learned so far about Thor: Love and Thunder.
UPDATE 3/9/20: Groot voice actor Vin Diesel revealed in a new interview that some members of the Guardians of the Galaxy will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.
UPDATE 3/6/20: In an interview with ET Now, Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson confirmed that Christian Bale will play an undisclosed villain in the film.
Taika Waititi will reunite with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson
New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who helmed Thor: Ragnarok, is back for Love and Thunder. He’ll direct the film and co-write the script with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. And you can’t have a Thor movie without Chris Hemsworth, who is back to play the Asgardian god once again. Tessa Thompson, who played Valkyrie in Ragnarok, is also back. In Avengers: Endgame, we learned that she assumed the role of King of Asgard–ruler of the surviving Asgardian population, now residing on Earth–which should provide some fun material. Will Thor regret giving her the mantle, or will he honor his new king without reservations?
Speaking of returning cast members, this next one is a whopper…

Natalie Portman will play female Thor
Maybe the biggest surprise of the MCU panel was the reveal that Natalie Portman would return to the role of Jane Foster. The actress played the scientist–and love interest of Thor–in the first film and its sequel, Thor: The Dark World, but was written out of the MCU shortly thereafter. Though she had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-appearance in Endgame, her whereabouts have never been clearly defined, and her absence was a decision of Portman’s–likely due to some behind-the-scenes trouble with The Dark World.
But somehow, they lured her back. And that’s not all. At Comic-Con, Waititi talked about his love for Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor, a comics story where Jane Foster becomes a female version of Thor. Portman took to the stage to claim Mjolnir, confirming that lady Thor will factor into Love and Thunder in a major way.
This is not a drill, folks! Natalie Portman will play female Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder!
We’re so excited and surprised we can barely form the words! If you’re wondering how Jane becomes Lady Thor, check out our primer about the comics history of the character here.
When does Thor: Love and Thunder come out?
The Comic-Con panel gave us release dates for most of Phase 4, including one for Thor: Love and Thunder. Sadly, it’s still a ways off. The film is slated to hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
