Everything We Know About THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

We at Nerdist are big fans of Thor, and are always here for more God of Thunder content. Lucky for us, Kevin Feige agrees. At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, we finally learned more about the fourth Thor film at the Marvel Cinematic Universe panel. In a sea of new announcements, one thing was clear: Thor 4 is going to rock our socks off.

Here’s everything we’ve learned so far about Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Plot

The film picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with the titular God of Thunder retired from avenging, hanging with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and doing some soul searching. But naturally, it doesn’t last too long before he’s roped into his latest mission. Marvel Studios released an exciting first teaser, featuring, of course, yet another ionic classic rock song.

Thor’s been through the wringer during his Marvel journey, so it makes sense he’s looking to take a breather. After all, he’s lost his mom, dad, brother, best friend, homeland, crown, and a whole lot more along the way. But at least his sense of humor is still intact. And his new fit(s) couldn’t look any better.

In addition to the teaser, Marvel also dropped the film’s synopsis:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced—a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who—to Thor’s surprise—inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

And now, we finally get to see a full trailer for the film, which includes our first look at the terrifying Love and Thunder villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

Jason Aaron’s Marvel comics are definitely a major inspiration for Love and Thunder and specifically for Jane’s role.

Behind the Scenes

Taika Waititi is back in the director’s chair for Thor: Love and Thunder. The writer/director, who helmed Thor: Ragnarok, is co-writing the film with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum are producing the film.

Thor Love and Thunder’s Cast

You can’t have a Thor movie without Chris Hemsworth, who is back to play the Asgardian god once again. And director Taika Waititi is reprising his fan-favorite character, Korg. Tessa Thompson, who played Valkyrie in Ragnarok, is also back. In Avengers: Endgame, we learned that she assumed the role of King of Asgard—ruler of the surviving Asgardian population, now residing on Earth—which should provide some fun material. Natalie Portman is also back as Jane Foster, Thor’s scientist ex. Aside from the briefest of cameos in Endgame, Portman hasn’t appeared in the MCU since Thor: The Dark World. But this time, she’s back… as the Mighty Thor. Jaimie Alexander, who has also been absent since The Dark World, is also returning. (Alexander also recently voiced an episode of What if…?)

In addition, the Guardians of the Galaxy actors—Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper,  and Pom Klementieff—appear in the film.  Christian Bale is the film’s Big Bad, Gorr the God Butcher. Plus, Matt Damon and Russell Crowe will cameo, the latter as Zeus and hopefully the former as a Loki actor once more.
