Welcome to our new look Everything Coming to Streaming column where each month we’ll run down the best of what’s hitting your fave streaming channel! This month Netflix is offering up the long-awaited Breaking Bad movie, an acclaimed Eddie Murphy comeback, and some killer kung-fu realness.
One of the most anticipated films of the year this spin-off of AMC’s smash hit show is heading straight to Netflix (and also to select theaters). Following Jesse Pinkman after his daring escape at the end of the final season, this will likely be a brutal and gritty offering and we’re really interested to see how this updates the world of Breaking Bad over a decade since it first aired.
Dolemite is My Name
Eddie Murphy hasn’t been too active in years of late but with his new Netflix special coming up and a critically acclaimed performance in Dolemite is My Name he’s clearly aiming to put himself back on the map. The film currently sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells the true story of Rudy Ray Moore who crafted the Dolemite persona on stage and eventually on screen in a series of cult Blaxploitation movies. After killing it at TIFF it’ll be intriguing to see how this lands with viewers when it hits the streamer.
Ben Wheatley has been one of our favorite directors since he broke our brains with the crime / folk-horror mashup Kill List. Free Fire is a very different kind of beast as he embarks on an intimate comedy crime thriller featuring Brie Larson. The film centers on a small group of crooks and the chance meetings that have a deadly effect on their meeting with local gun dealers.
Big Mouth S3
Netflix’s hit gross out comedy returns for a third season as the cast of kids deal with the very real monsters of puberty. The all-star cast includes Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Slate, and Jason Mantzoukas return as the kids deal with all the disgusting realities of growing up and falling in love.
Master Z: Ip Man Legacy
The radical continuation of Donnie Yen’s iconic Ip Man series centers on Cheung Tin Chi who was defeated by Yen’s titular hero. Recovering from the dishonor of the defeat Cheung Tin Chi keeps a low profile until he gets embroiled in a gang war after trying to help a friend. This super fun spin-off features martial arts legends like Tony Jaa and Michelle Yeoh as well as Dave Bautista and Hong Kong movie icon Philip Keung.
