“Oh, Mary!‘s Cole Escola is writing a Miss Piggy featured film” is the kind of sentence that sounds too good to be true. But not only is that a real thing that is actually happening, it’s somehow even better than that. Oscar winners Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence are both producing and plan to appear in the movie.
And, for those who had the audacity to think that Stone or Lawrence would try to play a version of Miss Piggy, they are VERY wrong. Emma Stone addresses this very serious and very wrong idea during a W Magazine interview.
“First of all, that is the biggest insult to Miss Piggy I’ve ever heard, and I will not have her name dragged through the mud like that,” she stated. “Why would I play a literal star? She’s the greatest. No, of course I’m not playing Miss Piggy. And neither is Jen. We pale in comparison. Are you out of your mind? Miss Piggy is playing Miss Piggy. She would be storming out right now at the mere suggestion.”

What an epic quote. Jennifer Lawrence was the one who announced that Cole Escola, who just joined the cast of One Piece, is penning a movie centered on The Muppets‘ fashion icon. Lawrence revealed this perfect pairing of writer and subject matter during an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. (A visit we first learned about at Deadline.)
“I don’t know if I can announce this,” said Lawrence, “But I’m just going to. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.” Both will almost certainly appear in the film, too. When asked about that possibility, Lawrence said, “I think so. We have to.”
Yes. You do, Jennifer Lawrence. You really do.

While there’s no official word from either Disney or The Jim Henson Company about the film’s development, and Lawrence didn’t share any plot details, this announcement guarantees fans will do everything they can to make sure it happens. It has to. Despite being one of the most vocal divas in history, Miss Piggy has never starred in her own film. And Escola—who wrote and won a Tony for starring in their Broadway smash comedy Oh, Mary!—is an absolutely perfect choice to capture Miss Piggy’s voice. Their other notable credits include At Home With Amy Sedaris, Tuca & Bertie, and Difficult People. If anyone can make The Muppets‘ diva shine, Escola can.
Writing a movie, even one produced by two big-time stars like Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence, is still a long way off from actually getting that movie to theaters. But we think this film has a real shot at actually happening even beyond Escola’s talents. What executive would be brave enough to tell Miss Piggy no?
