Christopher Nolan Recalls INTERSTELLAR Scene He ‘Didn’t Particularly Like’

Taking a breather from ping-pong stardom, Timothée Chalamet packed up the paddle and took a trip to AMC Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. There, the Marty Supreme actor reunited with his former director Christopher Nolan in a special Imax 70mm screening of Interstellar. Chalamet interviewed Nolan before the film, reflecting on his role in the project. And apparently there was one specific scene of Chalamet’s that Nolan didn’t particularly like.

In the film, Chalamet plays Tom, the teenage son of Matthew McConaughey’s character Cooper. He shares that to this day, Interstellar remains his favorite project that he’s been in. The Oscar nominee even admits that he “wept for an hour” the first time he watched it and realized his role was cut down.

“Though my role is not enormous in Interstellar—I think I was number 12 on the call sheet—this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet,” Chalamet tells the audience. “And it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in. It’s the film I’ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history.”

Nolan notes that after an initially rocky start with critics, it was both “an incredible relief and a humbling thing” when Interstellar became a box office hit.

“When you make a film on that scale… every screening we did as we were finishing the film, there would be somebody who would be in tears and deeply moved by it. That’s enough,” Nolan adds.

One highlight of the film is the gutwrenching scene of Cooper as he watches years of messages from his kids growing up. Chalamet has some pretty memorable clips in that sequence. Apparently, Nolan thought Chalmaet’s delivery was a bit too dark.

“When you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone,” Nolan recalls. “It felt too much for me. I didn’t particularly like it. I told you about it, and you went ahead and did whatever the f**k you wanted and carried on.”

In the end, Nolan dropped it, and the recordings made the final cut.

If Chalamet didn’t push back, who knows how different that scene would have been. Nolan now pivots to his next big project, The Odyssey, while Chalamet gears up for Dune 3. Filmed specifically for Imax, The Odyssey hits theaters first on July 17.
