BLOODSPORT Remake From A24 Is in the Works

Another day in the world of entertainment means another reboot, revival, or reimagining of a film or show that doesn’t need one. Why creatives continue to try to twist and stretch previous IP in hopes of scoring a box office win is beyond me. But hey, I’m just a nerdy writer. Deadline reports that A24 and Michaela Coel are teaming up for a reboot of Bloodsport that’s currently in the works.

For those who don’t know, the original 1988 Bloodsport film was a huge launch pad for Jean-Claude Van Damme. He went from being a very good Belgian martial artist to a worldwide superstar. In the film, he portrayed an Army officer named Frank Dux who competes in an underground Hong Kong tournament called the Kumite.

The film was so successful that it spawned three sequels. It is not clear if Van Damme will have a role or a cameo in this film, but Coel is very excited about her Bloodsport reboot with A24. She will write and direct this venture, which I imagine will have a woman lead this time around.

“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them,” she said in a statement. “I am excited to explore this world, especially with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F*CKING GO.”

Right now, there are no actors attached to the project. We will have to keep our eyes open to see who steps up for the challenge.
