BALDUR’S GATE 3 Astarion Comics Are Coming Soon

Recently, we heard that Baldur’s Gate 3 comics were coming our way from Dark Horse Comics and Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast. And now, we know that these first Baldur’s Gate 3 comic adventures will feature none other than, of course, Astarion himself. Interestingly, Astarion is NOT the most romanced character in Baldur’s Gate 3; that honor goes to Shadowheart. But he’s certainly the vampire who’s made the biggest splash since the game’s release. First, he received a backstory novel all to himself (which you can snag here today), and now, Astarion is getting his own series of comics… At least for now. It seems he will, sadly for him, have to share. Here’s what we know about the Baldur’s Gate 3 Comics and how they’ll tell their stories.

How Will the Baldur’s Gate 3 Comics Work?

Okay, here’s how the Baldur’s Gate 3 comics will work. Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast will release all Baldur’s Gate 3 stories under the heading of one ongoing comic series, aptly titled Baldur’s Gate 3. But every 6-12 issues or so, the “player character” of the stories will shift. That is, Astarion will star in Baldur’s Gate 3 issues #1-6. After that, Karlach will take over as the main character of issues #7-18. And we bet another one of our favorite Baldur’s Gate 3 companions will head up the comics after that.

This way, no one Baldur’s Gate 3 character gets their own comic series, but each one can come to the forefront at any time.

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Comics Kick Off with Astarion Issues

First up, of course, are a series of Astarion comic issues. Baldur’s Gate 3 issues #1-6 “will follow beloved vampire spawn Astarion Ancunín as he hunts a killer in Waterdeep.” And here is a more specific synopsis of Astarion’s first foray into comics:

Astarion Ancunín is enjoying his freedom after escaping the clutches of Cazador Szarr. But when Waterdeep is rocked by a spree of gruesome ritual murders, Astarion must hunt down the killer before he becomes their next victim!

It’s hard to say with certainty when during the Baldur’s Gate 3 game timeline these comics take place. But we’ll be very curious to find out, darling.

There Will Be 5 Cover Variants Available for Astarion’s Comic Issues

Astarion’s comic story arc will be written by award-winning author Alyssa Wong (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Deadpool), penciled by Vincenzo Carratù (Hulk: Smash Everything, Dracula: Blood Hunt), inked by Elisabetta D’Amico (Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories—The Bad Batch, Kill All Immortals II), colored by Valentina Taddeo (Werewolf by Night), and lettered by Buddy Beaudoin (The Flash).

Astarion will receive five cover variants for his first comic chapter, with art by Gerald Parel, Scott Fischer, Angela Wu, and Tyler Walpole, and one blank character creation cover. And yes, they are all beautiful, romantic, and bloody. It’s all just right for Astarion.

Karlach Will Take Over the Baldur’s Gate 3 Comics After Astarion

Astarion will have to cede the crown after Baldur’s Gate 3 issue #6, though. Instead, Queen Karlach will take over to tell her new comic story. We’ll spend the next twelve issues of Baldur’s Gate 3 (#7-18), following Karlach into the Nine Hells. Karlach’s comic story will be written by Becky Cloonan (Somna, Four Gathered on Christmas Eve) and illustrated by Francesco Scimonelli (Dick Tracy). But that’s all we know about it so far.

Will Other Characters Get Stories in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Comics?

Yes! A release shares that future arcs of the Baldur’s Gate 3 comics will revolve around “Wyll, Shadowheart, Gale, and Lae’zel, with appearances by other Baldur’s Gate 3 characters.” We know fans are very keen for these stories, especially more stories about Wyll!!! So we’re keeping our fingers crossed these tales arrive sooner rather than later.
