Archie Comics Reveals Plans for Three New TV Series

Between Riverdale and Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Archie Comics has managed to introduce its timeless characters to a new generation of fans.

However, the company’s television ambitions are far from over, and Archie has revealed plans for three additional TV shows. Via The New York Times, the first of the three series in the works is an updated animated incarnation of Archie and his friends. There have been numerous Archie cartoons in the past, but this one will reportedly lean more towards comedy than the current comic book series or even Riverdale. The second show is also an animated series, with Josie from Josie and the Pussycats in the lead. That series is described as a “horror-tinged” story. Perhaps Josie and her band will encounter the supernatural while on tour. We pitched a similar idea last year.

The third and final show revealed in the story is a bit of a surprise. It’s a live-action adaptation of Sam Hill, a private detective character whose adventures have only been sporadically published within the last few decades. Sam Hill is far from an obvious choice for an adaptation, but it could be a sign that the company is attempting to expand its reach. The accompanying report states the three shows are being pitched to streaming services and broadcast networks.

Surprisingly, it doesn’t appear that Archie is planning further adaptations from its horror comics line or its Dark Circle superhero characters. Riverdale may preclude any live-action Afterlife With Archie, but it would probably work best as an animated series.
