If you’re anything like me, you grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s and are super nostalgic for the games, shows, and toys you grew up with. Going back and replaying Trivial Pursuit while watching He Man sounds like a good idea, but maybe you should rethink your plan. Here are some games that bring the flavor of our childhoods without the crushing disappointment of things not quite standing the test of time.
Bob Ross: Art of Chill
If you grew up in the mid-eighties and early nineties, you watched Bob Ross paint his happy little trees on PBS. There are still stations that play the reruns to this day. Nothing could faze him; he was the epitome of chill. The object of Bob Ross: Art of Chill is to collect 30 chill points. To do so, you need to paint the landscaping features of the paintings before Bob completes the painting. You get bonus points for completing features before he does. Let’s get crazy and make some happy little accidents.
Tales from the Loop
If your nostalgia runs more E.T. or stems from watching Stranger Things, Tales from the Loop is the perfect role playing game for you. You play a teenager in the late 80s, solving the mysteries connected to the Loop. You’ll have to deal with mysterious machines and weird creatures while dealing with normal teenage problems. If you want to see some amazing artwork to get you in the mood, check out acclaimed scifi artist, Simon Stålenhag.
T.I.M.E. Stories: the Marcy Case
You are a temporal agent assigned to go across time and space to protect humanity from paradoxes and faults that threaten the fabric of the universe. This is a game of decksploration, everything you need to complete your mission is in the deck. You move around the board and inspect the different elements to collect enough information to complete your mission. In the Marcy Case, you are saving young Marcy from a mysterious epidemic. You will need the base game, T.I.M.E. Stories, to play this expansion.
Legendary: Big Trouble in Little China
Have you paid your dues, Jack? Yes sir, the check is in the mail. Big Trouble in Little China is pure camp, so you can expect the game to be the same. Play as the Pork Chop Express, Gracie Law, Jack Burton, and Wang Chi. Can you defeat the three storms and Lo Pan? It’s all in the reflexes.
Princess Bride: I Hate to Kill You
My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die! Pick your favorite swordsman (I promise not to judge you if you pick Prince Humperdinck) and battle to the pain. Roll your dice and add a move card to beat your opponent. Whoever has the highest number of swords scores a hit and loses a die. Tensions mount, there can be one survivor. First player to score five hits wins. Inconceivable.
