I had lots of expectations when Lucasfilm debuted its first-ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The same was true when the show’s spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett, premiered on Disney+. But one thing I never imagined would be true of either was that each would feature Tusken Raiders in prominent roles. Fans first met those infamous denizens of Tatooine when they attacked Luke Skywalker. Now they’re among the most complex and empathetic groups in the galaxy far, far away. Their elevated status in the franchise also means we’re certain to see them serving as inspiration for cosplayers. And if you want to get in on the fun Van Oaks Props is here to help. The YouTube channel’s new video shows how you can make your very own Tusken Raider helmet.
Derek Young’s latest DIY project uses what he calls “some basic tools and hot glue” (along with a 3D printer) to make an authentic-looking Tusken Raider helmet. (Which we first saw at Laughing Squid.) His piece features everything from parts molded in resin to “duck canvas” weathered with instant espresso coffee. His cosplay-specific glue helped him turn a polished base into a worn-out helmet that looks like it has survived many a harsh sandstorm on Tatooine.
This helmet might not be a screen accurate recreation, but you’d never know. It fully captures the aesthetic of the mask. If you want to try making one for yourself you can find the design Young used at stormtrooperguy’s Thingiverse page. However, it’s not a new model created because of the Tusken Raiders elevated status in the Star Wars galaxy. It dates back to 2017.
The Tusken Raiders have been around since the beginning of the series. But now that we know they aren’t just villains fond of kidnapping Skywalkers we expect a lot more cosplayers to be dressing like them.
