All the way back in 1989, Super Mario Land was one of the first games for the Game Boy and the very first Mario title that wasn’t created by Shigeru Miyamoto. For its time, Super Mario Land did the best it could within the limitations of the Game Boy hardware on its way to becoming one of the all-time best-sellers in the Super Mario series. And yet Super Mario Land’s reputation has suffered a bit in the nearly three decades since its release because some fans felt it wasn’t innovative enough. Now, one Mario fan is taking his love for Super Mario Land to the next level by recreating several of the levels with Super Mario Maker!
YouTube user KHAce posted his Super Mario Land recreations online. However, he noted that the video was edited to add the music from Super Mario Land and some of the levels could not be fully recreated due to the available tools of Super Mario Maker.
These recreations may not be 100% accurate to the original game, but they appear to have captured Super Mario Land‘s flavor. Unlike many of the fan-created Mario Maker levels, Super Mario Land wasn’t designed to be nearly impossible to play. It was simply meant to be a fun way to enjoy Mario on the go. The technology has come a long way since then, but this game still deserves to be discovered by a new generation of fans.
KHAce also posted a follow up video that offered a a side-by-side comparison of the original Super Mario Land and his recreation, with commentary.
Now, if you really want to play the original Super Mario Land, it was released on Nintendo’s virtual console a few years ago. That may be a more viable option than hunting down a working Game Boy. But for anyone who missed the original game, these Mario Maker levels may be the next best thing.
