Miami is one of the largest and most diverse cities in America. It’s a slice of tropical paradise with palm trees, beaches, great food, and plenty of things to see and do. One of those attractions is the city’s expansive art and museum scene which showcases its rich history. Now, that scene is getting ready to grow in an interesting and innovative new way. As reported by My Modern Met, Miami is set to open ReefLine, an underwater sculpture park designed by architecture company OMA. And it sounds like an incredible project.
ReefLine will span a massive 7 miles and feature artwork from various famous creatives. According to the post, the first phase should be ready by December 2021. Phase 1 attractions will include reef sculptures, a snorkeling path, and a concrete car “traffic jam” exhibit. This coincides with Miami Art Week for perfect timing. As far as the remainder of the project, there’s no concrete timeline available right now.

ReefLine is going to be a tourist hot spot for sure; however, this initiative is much more than providing entertainment. It is a “resiliency” project that will fight against climate change, damage to coral reefs, and rising sea levels. The designers are working with The BlueLab Preservation Society, marine life experts, and a host of other professionals to make sure that every material and aspect of ReefLine is not harming existing wildlife.
OMA partner and project design leader Shohei Shigematsu spoke further about ReefLine and its goals. “The ReefLine is unique because it brings attention to and mitigates the dangers of climate change in Miami, while simultaneously enriching the city’s vivid art scene. We look forward to working with the diverse group of experts and professionals on our first underwater cultural masterplan and sculpture.”
It will be fun to dive into Miami Beach waters to check out this unique exhibition.
