It’s doubtful anyone knew that when Clerks was released in October 1994, it was going to launch an entire cinematic universe, but 25 years later, Kevin Smith‘s View Askewniverse will see its eighth movie come to theaters this month with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. And it won’t be the last. The director has announced he will say goodbye to the characters that started it all with Clerks III, the final installment in the unlikely trilogy.
Smith revealed on Instagram that after spending a day signing movie memorabilia with Clerks star Jeff Anderson and Jay himself, Jason Mewes, they have all agreed to make another Clerks movie. It will conclude the story of cinema’s most infamous cashiers. Even though Smith said he just started writing the actual script, he confirmed it will also see Brian O’Halloran return as Dante.
Smith also described what the film will be about, with it focusing on the themes of long term friendship and how it’s never too late to make changes. “It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future,” he wrote.
According to Smith, this will be totally different script than the one he had written previously for a planned third film, which was abandoned in 2017 when Jeff Anderson dropped out. However, whatever happened during their autograph session seems to have mended whatever fence was broken. (Or rather, since this is Clerks, whatever iron gate was stuck.)
It’s only fitting Clerks will end with a third film, since Clerks II came out in 2006. Now, we’ll all get to find out what Randal thinks of another trilogy—the new Star Wars.
