If you grew up in the ’90s, chances are your days were filled with a very specific TV schedule. Cartoons in the morning, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood after school, and a smattering of other programs that both educated and entertained you. One of these ’90s TV staples was the PBS series Ghostwriter, about a group of young friends from Brooklyn who solved crimes with the help of a ghost, named Ghostwriter. The series was relatively short, only running for three seasons, but it holds a special place in the hearts of those who grew up with it. Now, the next generation will get their own Ghostwriter experience, since the series is being rebooted for Apple TV+.
According to Deadline, the Sesame Workshops’ series is getting an update for the new streaming platform. It’ll join a number of other projects set to launch on Apple’s service, like the Jason Momoa-starring See and Reese Witherspoon’s The Morning Show. This one is aimed at a younger audience, and will follow a ghost that haunts a local bookstore–releasing fictional characters into the real world–and the four kids who team up to solve the ghost’s unfinished business. The kids become friends through the process, as the ghost delivers them messages and hidden secrets only they can see and decode.
The Ghostwriter reboot will be written and directed by Luke Matheny (best known for The Dangerous Book for Boys). According to Deadline, each episode will feature a story arc grouped around famous literature, featuring a mix of classics and new writings by authors like DJ Machale and Kwame Alexander. This definitely sounds different than the original, Liz Nealon-created series, but the intentions are the same: to teach kids how to understand and appreciate writing and literature.
The Ghostwriter reboot will debut on Apple TV+ on November 1.
