SUPERNATURAL Final Season: What Can Team Free Will Expect?

The final season of Supernatural is nearly here, and coming off of the intense season 14 finale, we’re dying to know what’s coming for Team Free Will. At the show’s final Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, we got a tiny peek into what is to come this season.

Before we move on, here’s a spoiler warning if you haven’t seen the season 14 finale.

Season 14 ended on a pretty intense note, quite unlike any other. While other seasons have ended with intense or tragic cliffhangers, we’ve always known the boys would flip destiny the bird and get out of any scrape. Well, not so much this time. Chuck (aka God) showed up and shattered the entire fabric of belief that Supernatural was built on.

Sam, Dean, and Castiel are Team Free Will, fighting for humanity, defying the odds and destiny itself to save each other and humanity at large. But Chuck reveals in the season 14 finale that he’s actually been orchestrating it all. He’s not been the absent deity we thought he was, creating a world and letting it play out as it would. No, every time the Winchesters defied their destiny, it seems Chuck wrote that ending.

So what does this mean for Supernatural’s final season? It means Sam and Dean and Cas have to restructure their entire worldview. If all of the good they’ve done has just been something written by Chuck, and if it can be undone in a moment, is their work even worth it? Is the idea of being “Team Free Will” just a comforting lie they’ve been telling themselves?

Season 15 will likely pick up right where we left off with Sam, Dean, Cas, and a dead Jack (though his presence at the SDCC panel makes us think he’s going to be back in some capacity, at least for a bit) in a graveyard, surrounded by zombies. But however the boys manage to get out of that scrape, Chuck said it best “welcome the end.” We’ve reached the end of the road, and it seems everything the Winchesters stood for was an illusion and a plot device Chuck liked to use.

So Sam, Dean, and Cas aren’t just going to be dealing with baddies and the loss of loved ones this season. Instead, they’ll be fighting a newly-revived horde of monsters while also battling the crippling idea that everything they’ve ever done was actually planned by Chuck. And if he’s no longer rooting for Team Free Will, do they even have any hope of survival? Does humanity?

So in season 15, we can expect the end. It’s the end of the series, but it’s the end of the boys’ idea that they could somehow battle destiny. It’s the end of their strained-yet-friendly relationship with Chuck. And it just might be the end of the world as we know it.

You can catch the final season of Supernatural when it premieres on the CW on October 10.
