Are you ever lying in your bed at night, wondering important big life questions like: What is the sexiest American accent?
If you have, you’re in luck. The travel company Big 7 recently conducted a survey across its 1.5 million social media followers ranking the “most desirable” U.S. accents by state. The results… well, they sure were interesting.
Coming in at No. 1 on the list was Texas, which feels pretty legit; Texan drawls are featured in a number of films and are highly romanticized across pop culture. But No. 2 is where things start getting weird. That’s right, the second most desirable accent in America, according to Big 7, is the Boston accent.
Now, Boston accents also get a lot of screen time, but they aren’t exactly known for being soothing or pleasant, and especially not “sexy.” In fact, they’re more commonly associated with yelling and curse words, if we’re being stereotypical.
“One of America’s most imitated and parodied accents, Boston almost comes out on top of the country’s sexiest accents,” the Big 7 survey reads. “And yes, just like Mahhhhk Wahlberg, locals really do say ‘pahk yuh cahr in hahvuhd yahd’.”
The list continues on from there with more surprising results. The third spot goes to New York, another traditionally loud East Coast accent, with the fourth as Maine (Jud Crandall in the ’80s Pet Sematary film is a good reference for that), and the fifth as Chicago. We’re starting to wonder if “most desirable” accent is just code for “most recognizable.”That said, there are other bizarre findings on this Big 7 list that have us pretty stumped. While most go my individual state, some are broken down into region. The 14th spot, for instance, is “Yooper,” which refers to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where folks talk in a fun mix of Canadiana and Minnesotan. Number 35 is “Hoi Toider,” or “High Tider,” a rare South Atlantic dialect mostly heard in the rural parts of North Carolina. And ranked lowest: Long Islanders.
You can see the full list over on Big 7. We’re pretty sure this one will start some interesting conversations.
