AEON FLUX Live-Action Reboot Coming to MTV

MTV animated series Aeon Fluxoften written out as Æon Flux —  is returning to the network, only this time as a live-action series. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Davis, showrunner on MTV’s popular Teen Wolf, is looking to write the pilot script and become the series’ executive producer. Also on board as a producer is The Walking Dead‘s Gale Anne Hurd.

Aeon Flux has been made into live-action before, as in 2005 it was produced as a big budget film starring Charlize Theron in the title role. The movie was a notorious flop, but it seems Viacom, MTV’s parent company, still sees value in the property. The classic show was set in the dystopian future world of the year 7698, a world that has mostly been destroyed in environmental collapse, and centers on a female assassin from the nation of Monica, who joins forces with a group of young rebels to save the human race.

Created by Peter Chung, the original animated character of Aeon Flux was first seen in MTV’s early ’90s animated series Liquid Television, an anthology show that aired late nights on the network, and was a hotbed of trippy and cool animated fare for older audiences back in the day. It first aired as a series of six shorts, which proved popular enough that in 1992 it spun-off into five individual short-form episodes, and expanded yet again in 1995 as a 10-episode half-hour series. The first two seasons of the show used very little dialogue and relied mostly on sound effects. It wasn’t until the last season that the show began to feel more like a traditional series.

Aeon Flux joins several other MTV series in getting reboots, as the network has brought back or plans to bring back Jersey Shore, Yo MTV Raps and TRL, as well as an upcoming Real World revival. So, how soon before we get a live-action Beavis and Butt-Head revival?? It’s just a matter of time, right?
