Eli Roth Tries YA Gothic Horror with First Trailer for THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS

The name Eli Roth doesn’t exactly conjure up images of sunshine and rainbows. But it looks like the horror director, famous for gory films like Cabin Fever and Hostel, may have found a new calling helming children’s fare, because this first trailer for his upcoming YA flick The House with a Clock in Its Walls looks incredible.

Based on the classic children’s horror novel written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls tells the story of 10-year-old Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro), who moves into a creepy old house with his uncle Jonathan Barnavelt (Jack Black). The house contains a mysterious ticking clock in its center, as well as what appears to be some sort of large, tentacled monster. Lewis’ arrival jolts his new town to life, and uncovers a hidden world of warlocks and witches.

If that’s not enough to get you excited, the film also stars Cate Blanchett as Mrs. Zimmerman, Jonathan’s mysterious next-door neighbor, and Kyle MacLachlan as the former owner of the house. It’s too early to say if The House with a Clock in Its Walls will join the ranks of its greatest Amblin Entertainment predecessors, but it looks to carry its own sort of spooky charm. After Goosebumps, Jack Black is making a name for himself as a children’s horror movie star. If the film is a hit, it might even spawn a new franchise; Bellairs wrote 11 other gothic novels featuring Lewis Barnavelt.

We can’t wait to check out The House with a Clock in Its Walls when it hits theaters this September. Will you be watching?
