Since time immemorial, people have asked one question and one question alone. No, not “Are we alone in the universe?” or “What happens after I die?” or even “Should I get the Nacho Cheesier or Cool Ranch shell for my Doritos Locos Taco™?” No, dear reader, the question I am referring to is one that has plagued us all, and especially fans of Sherlock and Hannibal. Namely, who would win in a fight between Sherlock Holmes and Hannibal Lecter?
It’s a difficult question, to say the least. One is the world’s greatest detective (sorry, Batman) and has been portrayed in movies more times than any other in human history. The other is a psychiatrist with a passion for cooking, which unfortunately coincides with his passion for eating people. Both are incredibly smart, uncannily clever, and always three steps ahead of their opponents. So what would happen if the two found themselves diametrically opposed? Rather than furiously speculate all by my lonesome, I decided to ask one of the stars of Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Hannibal Lecter himself, Mads Mikkelsen.
The Danish actor, who portrays the villainous Kaecilius in Scott Derrickson’s new superhero flick, gave a very thoughtful answer about the outcome of such a momentous match-up. He also revealed that while there are no plans to bring Hannibal back for a fourth season, he is ready and willing to dive back into Bryan Fuller’s weird, wild, wonderful world.
If nothing else, this theoretical throwdown will help tide us over until Sherlock returns for what could be its final season on January 1, 2017.
