We now know who will officially be joining host Conan O’Brien when he takes the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This morning Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced this year’s Oscar nominees. And it was a Wicked good morning for the people of Oz. Below, we break down the full list of 2025 Oscar nominations, including surprises, snubs, and the nerdy favorites that made it into this year’s nominees.
Moviegoers who love Wicked and A Complete Unknown have plenty to celebrate today. Both movies are up for Hollywood’s biggest award and are also all over the acting categories. Both Ariana Grande (Supporting) and Cynthia Erivo (Lead) could take home acting trophies for Wicked at the Oscars. As could A Complete Unknown‘s Monica Barbaro and Edward Norton. They each earned nominations in their respective supporting categories. The film’s star, Timothée Chalamet, will be one of the favorites for Best Actor. Overall, Wicked earned 10 Oscar nominations this year, tying it with The Brutalist for the second most-nominated film of 2025.
The 97th Academy Awards have already made history, as well. Emilia Pérez‘s Karla Sofía Gascón is the first openly trans actress ever to be nominated. Her co-star Zoe Saldaña is also up for a gold statue in the supporting actress category. The musical also set another record. Its 13 Oscar nominations are the most ever for a non-English language film, and it’s the most-nominated film in 2025. Among its many potential awards is one for Best Director for Jacques Audiard. But only one of its two original song contenders will be able to win that prize.
There won’t be quite as much celebrating on Arrakis, though. Even with five nominations, including one for Best Picture, Dune: Part Two‘s Denis Villeneuve did not earn a director nod, one of the standout surprises/snub of the slate. It could be worse, of course. Which reminds us: stay far away from any Challengers fans today. Far away. (Needless to say, Challengers was not nominated for a single Oscar in 2025.)
It’s also worth a brief note to say that long-time genre actor Sebastian Stan, best known for many as the MCU Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, finally broke through to a major nomination. Stan received a 2025 Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance The Apprentice. But, we think Bucky Barnes was a job better done if we’re honest.
Villeneuve will still likely be in attendance thanks to that Dune: Part Two Best Picture nod. Who else will be there sitting with him when Conan O’Brien takes the stage at the Dolby Theater? You can find the full list of every film and person nominated for the 2025 Oscars below.
