Most of us are familiar with Ocean’s Eleven, the story of a group of top-notch gentleman thieves who pull off the heist of a lifetime in a Las Vegas casino. So when it was announced that Sandra Bullock would be headlining an all-female reboot of the franchise called Ocean’s 8, we were pretty interested to learn more.
Though details have been sparse since the announcement, this morning we got a brief synopsis of the movie: Bullock will be playing Debbie Ocean, and her mission will be to assemble a crack team to help her pull off one of the greatest heists ever seen–knocking over the Met Gala in New York City.So who are these women that will be heisting their way into our hearts? Let’s take a closer look at the new photo (click to see a slightly larger version), and speculate wildly at who these women are, shall we?
Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) and Lou (Cate Blanchett) are, obviously, #1 and #2 in the group. If this was a straight-up remake (which we know it isn’t, since Matt Damon will be reprising his role as Linus Caldwell in the flick), they’d be the Danny and Rusty of the group. Their subtle matching outfits\ and shared penchant for bold-yet-tasteful outerwear are definitely what you’d expect to see from two master thieves. Their getups are perfect for either crashing a party or breaking into a safe at any moment. Versatility is key in any good heist, after all.
Meanwhile Tammy (Sarah Paulson) looks like she’s more of a reluctant thief with secret, amazing skills. Perhaps she was hypnotized by Sandra Bullock’s amazing coat and is not totally sure how she got into this whole thing, maybe even feeling like she’s in over her head. But who can blame her for tagging along? If Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett came to ask me to join their heist, I’d be powerless to say no, too.
Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) look exactly like what you’d expect to find if you looked up “female thief” in the dictionary. Sunglasses on the subway and a long, leather jacket? I will not be surprised at all if she is the one who ends up slinking across a floor, trying to dodge a laser beam security system.
Nine Ball (Rihanna) has the look and the name of a hacker/computer expert with her unique clothing style and a badass nickname. She’ll definitely be the one ominously counting down how long Daphne has to contort her way through the security lasers before something like “the mainframe” goes back online.
Constance (Awkwafina) is rocking a bold, pink outfit at the rear of the car. You know she’s going to be the wildcard. She will absolutely be the one to move first, think later. But as with any good heist, you need a wildcard like that. She’ll likely be featured doing something bold and reckless like jumping out of a helicopter before the team is ready or rappelling quickly down an elevator shaft.
Amita (Mindy Kaling) is clearly the personality of the group, and likely a con artist extraordinaire–that bright red coat says it all. Even in the way she’s standing you can tell she brought her classic Kaling sass to the role. I expect she’s going to be the one tricking security guards into letting her pass without proper identification, and generally confusing the masses of the group’s real purpose at the MET.
Shockingly enough, Helena Bonham Carter’s character Rose looks pretty damn normal. Her outfit is decidedly nondescript, her name is quite ordinary, and her hair is styled into an everyday look. My money is on Carter being the wise, calm member of the group who spends a lot of time calling this heist her “one last job” and commenting on how she’s getting too old for antics like this.
Of course, while it’s fun to guess who these women are supposed to be in the film based on this one image, we can at least say for sure that this looks like the most badass group of thieves ever. You know they’re going to get into some crazy jams at the MET, but I can’t wait to see how these women hit one of the most lavish events in America. And while it’s unclear if we’ll see anyone from the original Ocean’s films other than Matt Damon’s Linus, I’m quite confident that Debbie Ocean will most certainly do her family name proud.
What do you think of the first image from Ocean’s 8? What are your guesses on who these characters are? Tell us your theories in the comments!
