Daniel Radcliffe <3 Tom Lehrer

Yet another reason to enjoy young Radcliffe! He’s a massive Tom Lehrer fan. And how does he recite “The Elements Song” on The Graham Norton Show?

IMPRESSIVELY! Impressively! Impressive…LY.

  1. Anastasia says:

On my vinyl version it ends: “These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard… And there may be many others but they haven’t been dis-carvard.”

(Also, nice reference to the LY song, another favorite.)

  2. cmj says:

Daniel Radcliffe is always a great interview. I bet after doing The Elements Song, he could do Animaniacs’ States & Their Capitols song without breathing, lol.

  3. Ross says:

Although, come to think of it, I’d have been even more impressed if, in honor of the usual level of taste on the Norton show, he’d trotted out “The Masochism Tango”…

  4. Ross says:

I agree, both about Tom Lehrer and young Radcliffe. He’s becoming an impressive fellow. Having played the father in “Equus” back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was always curious how he managed in that part(perhaps one day a recording of a performance will be released). Radcliffe was also quite good in a BBC-made(IIRC) TV movie as the son of Rudyard Kipling who ran off to the trenches in WWI & got himself killed. Worth checking out, if you’re curious to see him do some reality-based drama.

  5. RamblinMan says:

Wow I’m really surprised that more people don’t know who Tom Lehrer is. I’m really glad I grew up listening to him!

  6. Ryan says:

I can actually do this. Well. I sang along.

  7. Carma says:

Wow. That is impressive. I’ve got the boxed set of Lehrer’s work and that one I’ve never been able to master. 😉

  8. deb says:

On a somewhat-related note, I am sure viewers saw the commercials for the December 4th show: STEPHEN FRY!!!

  9. deb says:

This is a nice treat to read while The Node is crashed again!
I never miss The Graham Norton Show–new, like this, or the repeats (in whichever incarnation). It is usually even funnier!
I find it rare that someone nowadays knows who I am talking about if I bring up Tom Lehrer; I was especially surprised when someone as young as Daniel did!

  10. Bigger question: How the hell can people go through life without knowing who Tom Lehrer is?

  11. Deltus says:

New-found respect for him. I guess I won’t hold the whole Harry Potter thing against him.

  12. Stacy says:

The husband and I also watched this show last night. I don’t know why he was so nervous, because he nailed it!

  13. Kelly says:

@mndrew: Really? It took me only a few days to memorize New Math, but I can’t even attempt The Elements.

I’m also a huge Tom Lehrer fan, and to hear Daniel laud him just makes me respect Dan that much more. I completely agree that Lehrer is one of the funniest, cleverest men in the world. That the majority of his songs are still just as relevant and razor sharp today as they were half a century ago really speaks volumes of his genius.

  14. Wayne says:

I was waiting for Colin Farrel and Rihanna to jump in…..I don’t think they knew the lyrics….

  15. Alison says:

    That was am-AH-zing!
(And need I say…*ahem* a LOT better than Adam Savage did with it at w00tstock…)

  16. Jennifer says:

That was awesome! Especially after recently finishing the book “The Disappearing Spoon” and watching “Deathly Hallows!”

  17. Chip says:

I thought I loved the Harry Potter series before but this is one of the coolest things I have seen this year!

  18. Jet says:

I just came home from seeing the Deathly Hallows. So that was exactly what I needed.

  19. Jonathan says:

Excellent ! Love that song, and well impressed by his memory!

  20. Zach Coty says:

    I found that amusing

  21. Amanda says:

I know somebody who always sings this when they are super drunk. All the elements start to blend together by the second verse.

  22. Joseph says:

Don’t let horse gods touch your junk.

  23. Omi D says:

If you think that is impressive, just wait till you see his junk!

  24. mndrew says:

I’d have been more impressed if he did “New Math”, which I find much harder to remember.

  25. Darrin says:

I actually watched this last night. Must of been a new episode since your just seeing it as well. Loves me some Graham Norton.
Also cant wait for Matt Smith tomorrow. Huge fan of the podcast, keep up the good work you three!
