Over at Nerdist, we’re big fans of ND Stevenson, from their work on the comic Lumberjanes to the delightful Netflix series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. But their 2015 graphic novel, Nimona, holds a special place in our hearts. And so, we feel thrilled that a Nimona movie will finally come to life. After a disappointingly rocky road to the big screen, it arrives on Netflix in 2023. To celebrate the upcoming film, Netflix debuted the very first image.

The first look at Nimona, the adaptation of the ND Stevenson graphic novel, coming to Netflix.
Shapeshifter Films

The film boasts a pretty star-studded cast, too. Chloë Grace Moretz voices the titular Nimona. Joining her are Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin. Nick Bruno and Troy Quane will direct Nimona. We know the film will end up amazing.

Here’s the full synopsis from Netflix:

A knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.

Stevenson announced the exciting news on their Twitter account. They also debuted Nimona‘s first-look image. They wrote, “Nimona’s always been a spunky little story that just wouldn’t stop. She’s a fighter…but she’s also got some really awesome people fighting for her. I am excited out of my mind to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE…coming at you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix.”

We cannot wait for the Nimona movie. This beautiful tale truly deserves its long-awaited adaptation. Plus, that first image simply stuns. And we already cannot wait to see more images and most importantly, the trailer. We hope it comes soon. In the meanwhile, we’ll continue to enjoy our first look. And we will relish in the knowledge that this movie will happen.

20th Century Fox Animation first snagged the rights to Nimona in 2015. And its subsidiary Blue Sky Studios was set to produce the film. However, it was one of the many projects canceled after Disney acquired 20th Century and completely shuttered Blue Sky. Luckily Netflix swopped in to save the project, partnering with Annapurna Pictures. We love that kind of happy ending.

Nimona has not yet set an official release date. But the movie will debut in 2023.
