The Boys ended season two with its band of supe-hunters in a pretty good spot. The government cleared Butcher, Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie of all wrongdoing, and each was free to go and live their own lives. But no one can truly be free in a world where the most powerful individual is also completely losing it. Fortunately the new trailer for The Boys third season has a way to deal with an unhinged Homelander – unfreezing a Soldier Boy. And if that doesn’t work Billy has a powerful ace up his sleeve to level the playing field.
There’s never been a more apt trailer to quote The Simpsons‘ Barney Gumble: “Just hook it to my veins!” The fun starts with Homelander’s press tour to explain away his relationship with literal Nazi Stormfront. Eating so much crow publicly will definitely not help Homelander’s ever-slipping grasp on a semblance of sanity. However, as The Boys trailer makes clear, his employer Vought will not go down without a fight of its own. Nor will The Boys, who will seek help from some unlikely sources. Here’s the official synopsis for the season.
It’s been a year of calm. Homelander’s subdued. Butcher works for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So when The Boys learn of a mysterious Anti-Supe weapon, it sends them crashing into the Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.
Jensen Ackles’s beard is the early front-runner for season three MVP, but his rage could easily take that top spot. The obvious Captain America equivalent does remind us of the Marvel superhero. Just not the Steve Rogers version. Soldier Boy is a lot like John Walker’s Captain America, but much worse. The original superhero, and former member of the Seven precursor superhero group known as Payback, doesn’t seem any easier to handle than Homelander. And all those years on ice probably didn’t help. We doubt he’ll be the ally The Boys hoped for.
But they do have a backup plan. We see Queen Maeve give Butcher a serum that temporarily makes him a supe. That goes against everything Butcher has ever stood for, sure. But it’s hard to turn down laser eyes when you’re only goal in life is killing Homelander.
Season three will mark the return of Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Kapon, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T Usher, Nate Mitchell, Chace Crawford, Dominique McElligott, Claudia Doumit, and Giancarlo Esposito. This trailer also gives us our best look yet at another new supe joining the fun, Laurie Holden’s Crimson Countess. She seems like fun!
That is if you enjoy seeing bodies blown up in an instant. And if you love this show that’s exactly the type of thing you enjoy. It’s certainly one of the many reasons why we’ll be tuning in when The Boys season three debuts on Prime Video with three episodes on June 3.
