Robert Baratheon Totally Predicted GAME OF THRONES’ Future

Editor’s Note: this post contains spoilers for the entirety of Game of Thrones. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

The recently concluded seventh season of Game of Thrones neatly set up the series’ endgame while finally delivering the long-delayed homecoming of Daenerys Targaryen. As it turns out, these events were foreshadowed all the way back in the first season by King Robert Baratheon, the man who killed Daenerys’ brother Rhaegar in battle and took the crown during Robert’s Rebellion. Now, a new supercut has compiled Robert’s dire warnings and predictions alongside clips from seasons six and seven where the events came to pass.Warning: there are major spoilers ahead if you aren’t caught up!

Although Robert believed that Daenerys’ other brother, Viserys, would be the primary threat to his throne, he correctly realized that Daenerys’ marriage to Khal Drogo meant that the Dothraki horde would finally have a reason to cross the Narrow Sea into Westeros. And as Jaime Lannister discovered the hard way, it’s a huge mistake to fight the Dothraki in the open field. Even without her dragons, Daenerys’ forces outmatched the Lannister army.Another thing that Robert couldn’t have foreseen is that his friend Ned Stark protected Jon Snow, the true heir to the Iron Throne. But the most intriguing question is whether Robert realized that Jon’s parents, Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, truly loved each other, as Lyanna’s “abduction” by Rhaegar was one of the reasons that the rebellion was started. Robert clearly had feelings for Lyanna, and she had been promised to him before the war. Was Robert’s Rebellion the story of a man on a personal quest of revenge against the Targaryen family for Rhaegar stealing the woman he loved? Sure feels that way. What did you think about the new Game of Thrones supercut? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
