The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most expansive and immersive video game experiences of all time, but that’s only true for one person at a time. Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, the Zelda series has been pretty much exclusively a single-player experience, but that’s (unofficially) about to change thanks to a fan mod (via Gamnesia).
A modder who goes by the name Fooni is working on a mod that would bring local multiplayer to the Wii U version of the game (since games on older consoles are typically easier to mod). The way this works is that a second player is given control of one of the game’s NPC’s, which would have modified skins and items so it would look like a second Link. Fooni says this mod won’t actually be finished for another year or so, though, because this stuff is pretty complicated.Still, Fooni posted some screenshots that seem to show a functional early version of the mod in action, with two Links on screen and even a “You cannot ride Player 1’s horse…” message when Player 2 presumably tried to mount the occupied steed.
This early on, there are still a ton of questions to be answered. For instance, how will the camera work? How about item inventories? What other concerns do you have about this in-progress mod? How excited are you to see it in action? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
