Update: 5/23/2017
Director James Gunn has gone and posted even more mock movie posters that were cut from the final release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, featuring Nathan Fillion as movie star Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man. Among these are parodies of classic films like Conan the Barbarian, Horns, and even Inception. You can check out James Gunn’s new Facebook posts down below:

Actor and beloved nerd icon Nathan Fillion, best known for his roles in Firefly and Castle, was very nearly in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Well, sort of. The actor and Guardians writer/director James Gunn are longtime friends, dating back to Fillion’s having starred in Gunn’s horror comedy movie Slither in 2006.
As a nod to his buddy, the Guardians sequel’s brief scenes back on Earth were going to feature movie posters advertising the “Simon Williams Film Festival.” Simon Williams, of course, is a name that should be instantly familiar to any fan of Marvel Comics, as that’s the alter ego of longtime Avenger Wonder Man.
Wonder Man was an ionic-powered superhero who also moonlighted as a Hollywood stuntman and, eventually, an actor and a movie star. His brain patterns were used to give the android Vision a human personality, and therefore the two thought of themselves as brothers of a sort.
For decades, Wonder Man has been an on again/off again member of the Avengers, and is one of the most well known Avengers to not yet make it into live-action yet. The entire idea of a Simon Williams Film Festival in the MCU confirms that the character exists in this universe, or at the very least his actor persona does.
In a Facebook post, which you can see down below, (via io9), you can read Gunn’s take on Fillion’s almost cameo, and check out the movie poster for the Simon Williams movie Tony Stark, clearly a Steve Jobs-style biopic of the armored Avenger.
So, judging from his post, it seems Gunn is open to Fillion making a flesh and blood appearance as Wonder Man down the line. After Fillion’s portrayal of Captain Hammer in Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, we know he can portray a full-of-himself, douchey superhero. I know this longtime Marvel Comics fan would lose it if Williams made any kind of appearance in Avengers 4 wearing the famous sunglasses and red leisure suit of Wonder Man. Sign me up right now.
What do you think of Fillion’s potential appearance in the MCU? Are you as stoked as we are at the thought of the possibilities.Let us know down below in the comments.
