How to Unlock Dark Link in THE LEGEND OF ZELDA BREATH OF THE WILD

There are few baddies in the history of The Legend of Zelda that have resonated with fans more than Dark Link. With this in mind, it’s not surprising at all that Nintendo decided to add a Dark Link Easter Egg to the latest entry in the series. By unlocking a certain creepy, though kind of adorable merchant in Breath of the Wild, you can indeed become Link’s more sinister counterpart. Allow me to explain how.

There are some prerequisites to unlocking the armor. First and foremost, you must have freed all four of the Divine Beasts in the game. That means following the main story quest. After that you’ll have to at least initiate the “A Shady Customer” side-quest to unlock the monster-loving merchant, Kilton.

Let’s get started. First, head over to the East Akkala Stable located in the northeast corner of Hyrule. Once there, you’ll have to talk to Hoz, who’s patrolling the area, in order to begin the “A Shady Customer” side-quest where you’ll need to take a picture of Kilton. Once you’ve started the quest, make your way over to Skull Lake, which is nearby to the left of the stable. The easiest way to get there is by teleporting to the Zuna Kai Shrine (if you’ve completed it, of course).

Kilton Breath of the Wild

The location is pretty easy to spot. If you look at your map on the northeast side, Skull Lake looks just like a skull. Kilton, the merchant who’s selling the goods, will be on the left eye of the skull, and will be hard to miss thanks to giant balloon attached to him. However, make sure you show up after 9 PM, since our new friend only comes out at night. When you encounter him, he won’t be open for business yet, but instead will give you his business card, which reveals that he will appear at Kakariko Village, Hateno Village, Rito Village, Zora’s Domain, Gerudo Town, Lurelin Village, or Lake Akkala. He will instantly disappear once he gives you this information.

You’re almost there, friends. More often than not, it seems like he usually spawns right outside Zora’s Domain through the west exit the first time you seek him out. If he’s not there, check one of the other locations mentioned on the card some time between 9 PM and 4 AM. Before talking to him, make sure to nab a picture of his beautiful face so you can later show it to Hoz to complete the side-quest (you might need to do this to make sure he keeps appearing at night). Once you initiate the conversation with Kilton, he’ll tell you about Mon, the monster currency that he invented. Basically, you can sell the monster parts in your inventory for Mon, which, unlike Rupees, can only be used at his shop, the Fang and Bone.

If you’ve freed the Divine Beasts, Kilton will add the Dark Link set to his shop for you to purchase! It will cost you a pretty Mon–almost 4,000–to get the full set, but can you really put a price on happiness? It’s most certainly not the most practical armor in the game, but it’s a great easter egg. It’ll also make you the coolest dude in Hyrule… despite the red glowing eyes.

Unlocking Kilton will also unlock other purchasable gear, including items for your horse, so make sure to save up all the monster parts that you may find on your journey. It’s also important to note that while using the Dark Link costume provides some decent defense, it doesn’t appear to be upgradable. So you’ll definitely look like a badass when fighting foes, but it may be lacking in functionality in comparison to other armor sets.

What do you think about the random easter egg? Will you be hunting Kilton down? Which foe has been your favorite in the TLoZ franchise? Are there any other secrets in Breath of the Wild that you were surprised to find in the game? Slash your thoughts into the comments section below!
