We all know Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination. But now, he’s going to step into a brand new kind of medium, a documentary. A Barney documentary honestly seems a long time coming if we think about it. Barney played a pivotal role in the lives of many generations, after all. And with ’90s nostalgia more prevalent than ever, it feels like a great time to revisit the purple dino. This Barney Documentary, which we first saw on  Deadline, will air on Peacock in 2022. Here’s what we know about it so far.

According to a release from NBCUniversal:

This documentary examines the rock star-like trajectory of Barney the Dinosaur, the beloved character who captured the hearts of millions of children and then became the target of hate and rage across pop culture, the early internet and playgrounds around the world… Using exclusive interviews and archival footage, the three-part documentary will offer first-hand accounts of the Barney phenomenon from the cast and crew to its most outspoken critics.

Barney certainly does have some rock-star vibes. And definitely, evoking his name will get a reaction. Whether good or bad… Who can say? But it looks like this documentary intends to capture it all. Barney, as a show, certainly reached almost mythical status. So it will be interesting to revisit what actually happened to cause Barney’s rise and eventual decline.

“Barney the Dinosaur was a ubiquitous character for children and parents alike, and we are thrilled to work with the Scout Productions team to bring this three-part series to Peacock,” Rod Aissa, EVP, Unscripted Content, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming shares. “This documentary is bound to captivate audiences like Barney has over the years.”

The Barney documentary will air as a three-part series on Peacock. Scout Productions, the executive producers of Queer Eye, will produce the show.

All in all, any remaining Barney fans out there certainly have cause to celebrate. First a live-action Barney movie, now a documentary. Barney the Dinosaur is back, baby.
