The COVID-19 pandemic has seemingly led to a major rise in virtual gaming. And for good reason—it’s one of the few ways to escape the stress of everyday life in 2020. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is everywhere, as is the game Among Us.
What is Among Us? It’s an “online multiplayer social deduction game,” which is a fancy way of saying it’s a murder mystery-type scenario you play online with other people. The game takes place in outer space. Players are either Crewmates or Imposters. Crewmates perform ship maintenance tasks and are responsible for finding the Imposters, a.k.a. the bad guys working against the mission. If all the Imposters are removed from the game, the Crewmates win. If the Imposters are not detected and the mission goes awry, the Imposters win.
Sounds like the perfect set-up for a TV show, right? That’s the idea behind Laugh Over Life‘s fun new series on YouTube, which we first heard about thanks to BoingBoing. They imagined Among Us as a reality television series, and the results are hilarious.
Here’s the description of the first episode:
There is an imposter among us. Our friends have found themselves on an all expense paid trip to mars. Our group has to figure out who on the ship is the murderer, while making sure they are doing their tasks so that their spaceship doesn’t fall out of space. Is red sus? Who is the imposter venting? Who will be murdered? Find out in this week’s episode of Among Us but it’s a reality show.
There really is a Big Brother vibe to the game’s premise. And that’s why this series is so brilliant. It’s taking the popular game and finding new ways to make it enjoyable.
There are currently three episodes of Among Us But It’s a Reality Show up on the Laugh Over Life YouTube channel. All are just short of 10-minutes long. The perfect way to pass time in quarantine. When you’re not playing Among Us, that is.
