Wes Anderson And Stanley Kubrick Mashup Works Too Well

What happens when you take the work of two of the most influential film makers of all time and smash them together? Surprisingly, you still get a fairly cohesive trailer that seems like it could have been made by either director.

With scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic The Shining and Anderson’s 2014 The Grand Budapest Hotel, YouTuber Steve Ramsden edited this faux trailer to work rather well. As we’ve mentioned before, Anderson’s film making has a level of violence that, when viewed in such a way (like this super-cut), seems more at home in a horror film. Combining that level of — to borrow a phrase from another Kubrick film — “ultra-violence” and the fact both film makers had/have a propensity to center almost everything in frame certainly also adds to the seamless mash-up.

The trailer for The Grant Overlook Hotel also benefits for the single shots of characters letting Ramsden to splice together interactions between both movies, allowing the mixture of dialogue to also work visually.

It’s odd to think that the Torrance family would fit in comfortably in the Wes Anderson universe but what’s even stranger is the idea that Anderson has probably been making horror films all along. I’ve said that I’d like to see something like Die Hard remade by Anderson, but I’ve changed my mind and need to see Anderson sincerely take on Kubrick’s work.

Can you imagine how immensely weirder A Clockwork Orange would be or how 2001: A Space Odyssey would play out with Jeff Goldblum as Bowman being told “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that” by a HAL voiced by Bill Murray? I’m going to make that Kickstarter right now actually.

What other Kubrick/Anderson mash-ups would work? Let us know in the comments below!
