Does VENOM Have a PG-13 Rating Because of Spider-Man?

In theaters on October 5, Venom will mark the beginning of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. That’s just a fancy way to describe the 900 Spider-Man adjacent characters controlled by Sony. Not all of them are going to be able to headline their own films, but Venom is a fine place to start. Spidey’s greatest nemesis was initially rumored for an R-rated solo flick; however, it looks like Venom will have a PG-13 rating. Today’s Nerdist News spins a few webs to see if Spider-Man is making his old adversary go soft.

Join guest host Amy “Symbiote Hunter” Vorpahl, as she explores the implications of Venom‘s rating. For starters, it means the film will have considerably less violence or foul language than Deadpool or Logan. But it’s possible Sony pulled Venom into more conventional territory with an eye towards bringing in Spidey for a future confrontation.

How can that happen if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is in the MCU? Remember, Marvel didn’t get the Spider-Man rights back from Sony. He’s technically on loan under a multi-picture deal, which could expire. So far, there hasn’t been any word on whether Marvel and Sony will renew that pact. If they don’t, Sony has the right to make their own Spidey movies outside of the MCU.

There is also an unconfirmed rumor that was shared on Collider Heroes from the late Jon Schnepp. According to Schnepp, Holland’s Peter Parker will have a cameo appearance in Venom. It’s far from a sure thing, but it could be a big step towards a Spider-Man vs. Venom battle down the line. Until we see Venom, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether a big screen rematch is in the cards.
