TV-Cap: Peter Jackson to Direct DOCTOR WHO, SUPERGIRL Gets a Full Season, and More

The week started with a bang in the TV news department. Who’s ready to catch up? Grab a cup of coffee before you settle in with today’s TV-Cap. We’re going to talk about a renewal for Star Wars Rebels, Peter Jackson’s video tease about directing Doctor Who, Supergirl getting a full season, a trailer for Shadowhunters, and more.

Ganging Up. It seems like The Walking Dead just returned to our television with Season 6, but it’s already time for the midseason finale. The episode aired on Sunday, and “Start to Finish” shook things up in Alexandria. Read Joseph’s review and then watch the above teaser that sets up the next chapter of the AMC zombie drama–it mentions Negan. [Slashfilm]

Meet M. Malone. Gotham’s acquiring another villain. Patrick “Matches” Malone will be played by Michael Bowen and will arrive during the second half of this season. The character’s description hints he might be responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne: “One of Gotham’s deadliest killers, Matches Malone is a weathered, philosophical hitman who may be the triggerman behind one of the most important crimes in Gotham’s history.” [ComicBook.com]

Early Access. Have Amazon Prime? Then you can watch the first episode of Season 2 of Transparent right now. Yep. No need to wait to dive back into the drama when the show premieres on Amazon for everyone on December 11. [Variety]

Going Home. The Season 9 finale of Doctor Who is ahead–it will air on Saturday, December 5–and the Doctor is back on Gallifrey. It’s taken so long. The trailer for “Hell Bent” picks up where the last episode left off and puts the Doctor on the ruins of the Time Lord planet. Who’s excited? [Nerdist]

Looking for a Director. Peter Jackson has mentioned his desire to direct Doctor Who, and it looks like it’s finally happening. Jackson shared a video on his Facebook page dropping all the hints that he’s directing without actually saying it–the Doctor and a Dalek even show up. Dan discusses the possibilities of Jackson in the director’s chair on the latest episode of Nerdist News (above). [Nerdist]

Supergirl Scores. It’s official. CBS has ordered seven more episodes of Supergirl, giving the series a full season. Well, more or less. The first season will have 20 total episodes. [TV Fanatic]

A Henchman. The new Mystery Science Theater 3000 has cast another villain. Patton Oswalt will play TV’s Son of TV’s Frank; Frank was the henchmen in the original series, played by Frank Conniff. Joel Hodgson made the announcement on the Bring Back MST3K Kickstarter page (the campaign has received over three million dollars, by the way). Oswalt will also be a guest writer for at least one episode. [Nerdist, Image: Joel Hodgson]

Ghost Fights Another Day. The Rebellion will continue in another season of Star Wars Rebels. Disney XD has renewed the animated series for a third season. It’s already in production and will return in 2016. [Nerdist]

A Tantalizing Tease. IFC’s Portlandia will return with Season 6 on January 21, and we have key art and a first look tease. The key art features the very elegant Carrie and Fred, and the teaser reveals they’re gonna do it–or at least talk about it. Watch the video at IFC. [Images: IFC/Tina Barney]

The Legends Are True. Freeform (formerly known as ABC family) is leaping into the supernatural next month with Shadowhunters. The adaptation of the first novel of the Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare follows Clary as she learns she’s a human-angel hybrid demon hunter–yeah, and you thought your teenage years were rough. The above trailer shows how she’s adjusting, and if you need more, flip through photos from the series at Variety. Shadowhunters will debut on January 12. [Comic Book Resources]
