TV-Cap: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Animated Series Announces Voice Cast, An Inside Look at POWERS, & More

Happy Wednesday! It’s new comic book day which already makes the middle of the week fabulous, and to add icing to to the cake, there happens to be some great comic book-related television tidbits. The premiere of Powers is just a few weeks away so Sony is starting to open the promotion floodgates. Today we have an inside look at the series, an update on the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, and news about a scripted series based on Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar.

A Different World. Powers debuts on PlayStation on March 10th. The series is based on the comic book by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming and takes place in a world where superpowers are common place and not necessarily always used for good. Detective Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley), a former Power, and his partner Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward) are at the center of the story; they work in the Los Angeles Powers division and investigate crimes committed by those with special abilities. I’m intrigued by the adaptation and a new inside look has me wanting to re-read the comics. [Twitter]

Is It Mr. J? Gotham went to the circus this week, and a character who may or may not be The Joker was introduced. Even if the identity of Jerome wasn’t made clear, the circus also brought the Flying Graysons to the series. Read Joe McCabe’s thoughts on “The Blind Fortune Teller.”

Pals On The Court. ABC’s untitled NBA buddy comedy pilot has found one of its leads. Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) will play a translator who is hired by an NBA team to help a rookie player who doesn’t speak English. [Deadline]

Going Back to Basics. Fans haven’t necessarily been the happiest about the direction of Sleepy Hollow this season – so much so that network execs commented in January on changing the show’s course. The return to form was on full display in “The Awakening” as the show embraced the wackiness it does so well. Clarke breaks it all down with the episode’s writer Raven Metzner on this week’s episode of SleepyCast. Go listen.

I Am Groot. Disney XD is still hooked on a feeling and is bringing a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series to the screen sometime this year. They’ve released a teaser trailer for the series, and they’re starting to announce the cast. Kevin Michael Richardson (Family Guy) will play Groot (he delivers the character’s line in the above video) and Trevor Devall (Johnny Test) will voice Rocket Raccoon. [/Film]

Oliver’s Not Going Anywhere. Yesterday we mentioned that Jessica Williams isn’t interested in taking Jon Stewart’s place on The Daily Show, and it doesn’t look like John Oliver will be stepping in either. HBO has renewed Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for two more seasons. I’m okay with this because Oliver continually makes me spray various liquids out my nose with his sharp observations. Each of the upcoming seasons will consist of 35 episodes. [Hitfix]

Dreadstar In Development. Longtime comic book writer and artist Jim Starlin is working with Universal Cable Productions and Benderspink to develop Dreadstar into a scripted series. Starlin created the character Vanth Dreadstar in the 1980s for Epic Illustrated and that lead to the ongoing Dreadstar series. The sci-fi fantasy comic could make for some interesting television. [Deadline]

Those Mountain Men. The 100 continues to wreck my guts each and every week, and it looks like my stomach won’t be disappointed by tonight’s episode. A new clip at TVLine shows Bellamy getting some assistance from Maya and her father.

Are you looking forward to the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series? Head to the comments and let us know.
