TMNT’S Michelangelo Goes to the Michelangelo Exhibit at the Met

It looks like even party dudes go high culture every now and then. That’s what we learned this morning when New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art tweeted a series of photos of Michelangelo, everyone’s favorite pizza-devouring, sewer-dwelling, hard-partying humanoid turtle, spending some time perusing his namesake’s art exhibit. The event was organized by NYC & Company, which has enlisted the Turtles as their Family Travel Ambassadors.

It’s common knowledge that each of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was named for a legendary artist, with Leonardo’s namesake (da Vinci) being the most famous and recognizable of the four—sensible, given that Leo leads turtle teens. But clearly, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo are no slouches, and the Met wants us all to recognize. “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman & Designer” has been on display since November and closes after February 12, so we can only assume this isn’t the nunchuck-wielding turtle’s first visit—just the most prominently (and exquisitely) photographed. On his way around the museum, Mike admired the signage, sketches, and sculptures on display, striking a few poses for good measure.

It’s tempting to speak for the turtle since he didn’t provide any sort of verbal review of the exhibit. Would he agree with the New Yorker’s assessment of “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman & Designer” as a “magnificent show,” or would he simply deem it “radical?” Who’s to say but the wearer of the orange mask himself? We’ll keep you posted as soon as he sounds off on the artistic merits of the Met’s collection. In the meantime, change your lock screen to the photo of a man in a Ninja Turtle costume gazing upon a Michelangelo sketch in one of the world’s premiere art museums. You’ll thank me later.

Which Turtle would be most annoying to go to the Met with? Let us know in the comments!
