The Indoor Kids #26: Easter Eggs and Mysteries (with DC Pierson)

This week, DC Pierson (Derrick Comedy, “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To”) joins Kumail and Emily to discuss some of the video game world’s most bizarre and interesting mysteries. Alien demons in Mario Galaxy? A Russian game that only exists while you’re playing it? Easter eggs from the dawn of time? All will be revealed! Plus we talk about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for, like, a while.

Science Explains Why Your Cat Keeps Knocking Stuff Over

Science Explains Why Your Cat Keeps Knocking Stuff Over

  1. chinzyut says:

Very good post. I am experiencing a few of these issues as well..

  2. Damien says:

This is one of my favorite episodes you guys have done. I’ve listened to it several times now, and even though killswitch is fake, (I looked for a downloadable file forever) it is still a great episode. Unfortunately i often listen to the indoor kids when i go to sleep, so every time i stay awake until the mjora’s mask story I don’t get much sleep that night.

  3. Iain says:

Supposedly David Prowse was given the line “Obi-Wan killed your father” in Empire. They kept that a secret from all the actors but Mark Hamill who was told to react to the real line and not what was actually said. Met him at a convention once and a friend of mine spoke with him for a bit. He is very bitter about his voice being replaced. Still a pretty cool guy though. It makes sense that he wrote a fitness book as he was a body builder before he went into acting.

    Anyway love your show!

  4. Ian says:

This episode has stuck with me in the same way that the Dan Harmon episode did. Excellent work!

  5. Pat Thompson says:

Dear lord, that Majora’s Mark “creepypasta” (as I’ve heard it called) was creepy when I first found it, but listening to you guys talk about it was somehow creepier…

To anyone who doesn’t know about it, look up “Ben Drowned” to find the YouTube videos in sequential order. You will $&*% you pants…..

  6. Hey there is a web series that deals a lot with these easter eggs and myths. It’s on GameTrailers and it’s called Pop Fiction.

In fact, listening to the Ryu one, I was all I know about it.

  7. Casey Corrigan says:

Earthbound mention? DC Piearson is my new favorite person.

  8. Pat T says:

Wow, really glad i listened to this episode! super interesting and creepy, thanks guys/emily!

  9. btribble says:

I always loved stuff like this, and there are so many easter eggs I wouldn’t mind another episode about them! 😀

Interesting hearing the hidden room in 2600 Adventure – back in those days programmers weren’t given credit for the games they made, so Warren Robinett found a way around it (this room would be VERY hard to get to without instructions)

Howard Scott Warshaw also hid his initials in Yar’s Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and ET. He also put the other two characters _in_ ET – as shown in this video:

Keep up the great work as always!

  10. Cosmin says:

The thing with complaining about Skyrim’s bugs is for a few versions, they’re not just crazy stuff happening, it was to the point it screwed up the speed of the game or screw up save games and on. It goes a bit beyond “game is a bit weird” and goes into “yeah I can’t even play this game without my console started freezing and my progress within it screwing up.”

  11. Sean says:

This was an awesome episode. I love the stories you guys find. Keep it coming!

  12. ronsalas says:

The best episode so far. That Half-Life headcrab sound was hella freaky. Especially because my fucked-up brain started asking itself “Hey, what if the God Help Me wasn’t acting? What if it wasn’t intentional at all but an actual cry for help from one of the creators of the games?”
Needless to say it gave me shivers and goosebumps and I can’t even listen to this part unless I’m in public.

    I’m a wuss.

  13. Lydia says:

I had to take off my headphones and stop listening to the Majora’s Mask story because I was too creeped out. And I was in a well-lit room at work with other people around! Nice job, guys!

  14. rhzunam says:

Eventhough it’s weird to hear Emily get fooled on such a clear hoax like Killswitch, this was one of the greatest episodes around. The creepy stories were great and even when not true, where still pretty creepy. Pierson was great and it’s should be repeated in the future as it was a lot scarier than the halloween episode. Keep up with the great shows.

  15. Alex says:

Hey guys in skyrim rather than opening a EVERY book in the game look at the value of the book if it is above 6 or 7 gold (ie a book worth 60 gold) then that will give you a quest or a skill. However some of the skill books are doubled up so when you pick it up it won’t get the skill cause you picked it up earlier

  16. Chris Ryan says:

Oh so THIS is why my Killswitch paper just got 150 hits in two days. Super cool.

Also, for anyone curious: I didn’t mention it in the paper, but the source of the Killswitch story is likely a couple living in Ohio (doing a WHOIS of the domains and affiliated sites returned Ohio-local addresses), but since the paper’s scope was just looking at one internet community’s responses to the urban legend I haven’t gotten a chance to confirm if they’re the original Patient Zero of the story or not.

  17. Wouter says:

    “sinneslöschen” is pronounced as “ZINnus-loe-zhun”

  18. Blake says:

Killswitch sounds like an incredible game, I can totally understand buying it for nearly a million dollars, because it’s like the coolest antique. The only way to keep it in pristine condition is to just never play it, but still know all about it.

  19. CD says:

That Majora’s Mask story totally freaked me out. Shouldn’t have listened to it with all the lights in the house off.

P.S. It was Irvin Kershner, The director of Empire Strikes Back, who talked to David Pross in the book DC mentioned. Not George Lucas

  20. Kumail Nanjiani says:

    Thanks for listening guys!

OlfactoryJazz, Yep. Killswitch does seem like a fake. But a fun story nevertheless!

s.davis… That is crazy awesome. Its neat to hear there might be some easter eggs out there, still undiscovered years later.

LevelledUp: Skyrim is great because its great. Its better than most other rpg’s because the story is better, the game is more immersive, the freedom is huge. Its the same reason why Star Wars is better than Black Hole; just because other games have been in the same genre doesn’t mean this one doesn’t do it better. So, i think this is the game to ge you back into gaming!

Amy D, Donatello was my guy. I was Donatello. Please say hi to him for me.

And thanks all for listening and getting creeped out! We were definitely getting scared while recording it…

  21. Nathan K. says:

    License to Kill ONLY!!! Yes!!!

  22. Amy D. says:

I don’t want to brag but the SVP at my work was the guy who was Donatello in the suit. Sometimes at meetings he says “Cowabunga” and I squee a little inside.

  23. Max G. says:

Another great episode from you guys. I have to say though that the Half-Life 2 thing and the Haunted’ Majora’s Mask story creep me the frak out. I have not felt that creeped out in a long time. So thank you guys for that. I like getting creeped out. It makes me feel so alive. Also, Emily is a damn, good storyteller. I want to hear her tell more stories.

  24. odin42 says:

Also, now that you have had the other 2 members of Derrick, ya gotta get Donald Glover on here. Cuz hes super awesome.

  25. odin42 says:

Wow, i was sitting in my brightly lit office cube and the haunted majoras mask story totally creeped me out. I totally agree with what you said about us all being rational adults, but still being creeped out by a good story.

  26. Tyler P. says:

What the hell? Why did I choose to listen to this podcast when I’m lying in bed and can’t sleep. No more sleep tonight! Creeped me the fuck out.

  27. Christine says:

Cloak and Dagger! I swear I have no idea how many times I watched that movie in the 80’s. One of my very favorites – thank you so much for reminding me of it.

  28. LevelledUp says:

I really enjoy your podcasts but I do get a little confused by one thing. I’m a reformed gamer so to speak (like Tom Lennon) and enjoy your podcast for the fun and charm but haven’t played recent games so keep that in mind with what I’m about to babble on about…

A lot of what you praise Skyrim for are long established aspects of mmorpgs. From the sound of it, the game is somewhat like walking around a good mmorpg with no other players. I mean it’s cool that npcs talk and that there’s history and that you can just go to mountains you see in the distance but that has been in gaming since around the late 90s. To be more specific, it basically sounds like an updated for our era version of Everquest, but solo. Which is not a bad thing, when it first started Everquest was just as addictive as what you are describing.

  29. Jabri Gistand says:

Hey guys! Love the podcast, first comment on the site, felt compelled to contribute.

Did you guys get these easter from I remember reading about the half-life thing here:

and the people of hell valley in mario here:

They have other articles based on video games you should give a look.

Also I have another thing to add about DBZ. In America, Hercule is called just Hercule, but in Japan he’s “Mr. Satan”. It was changed due to obvious reasons.

Anyway that’s it, like I said love the show!

  30. Benjamin Clarkson says:

Hey the talk of the easter egg in Adventure reminded me, you guys should read Ready Player One if you haven’t yet.

  31. s.davis says:

I’ve read several denials that Raiden is hidden in Mortal Kombat 3, & I know I may be called a cousin liar on this, but once while playing as Shang Tsung on the SNES I briefly morphed into Raiden, & was able to perform his back, back forward flying attack, so his code must be in there somewhere. I don’t know what I did to cause the morph, & have never been able to do it again.

  32. Jake says:

god i loved the book The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To. i always hope DC would write another book because he is talented

  33. RaphyL says:

The Headcrab Zombie voices being played backwards may be the scariest thing i have ever heard.

  34. Livius says:

    I was mentioned!
I’m the Swimming Argonian, I still love searching underwater for stuff.

  35. Lila says:

    My fav episode so far!

  36. OlfactoryJazz says:

I think KIllswitch is a fake, guys, sorry to say. Super interesting though, even if it’s not real it’s been an interesting hour or so of reading about it online. This might be worth checking out:

  37. Livius says:

    Downloading now.
Really looking forward to my lunch break for this one.
