Thank you for the spoiler warning and letting us know how far ahead to skip.

  2. kbtoys says:

Have you ever noticed that Kumail’s twitter name could be sung in harmony to the Culture Club song Karma Chameleon?
kuma, kuma, kuma, kuma, kuma, KumailN…

  3. IamJoseph says:

As they own both, I’d very much like Rockstar to release a GTA/L.A. Noir crossover. Play through all of GTA 5 or later, then download a DLC and be the cop whose got to bring the criminal you just played down. Do you want to win bad enough to lose?

  4. Ben H. says:

Sorry to be a nitpicky dick, but I wanted to explain the whole “Hot Coffee” thing a little bit. Hot coffee was a mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In the normal game when a character invites you in for coffee, you have sex but you only hear the sounds. However if you had the “hot coffee” mod installed on the computer version, when sex started you entered a graphic minigame. The user controls the rhythm of sex and the character CJ can get a blowjob and fuck missionary and doggy style to increase the girls “excitement meter”.

The controversy arose when notable anti-games lawyer Jack Thompson called out the game for lying to the public. Rockstar responded that the mod was created independently and that sexualized third-party mods for games have been around since the Doom era. However, the fact that the minigame contained unique dialogue tracks from Young Maylay (aka the voice actor of CJ) led video game journalists to discover that the minigame was in fact created by Rockstar but ultimately scrapped. However the unfinished minigame was still in the code for game on release and could be accessed using the hot coffee mod or on consoles with a hacking device. This caused the game to be re-rated to AO (Adults Only) and pulled from many major retailers like Walmart and Target. Rockstar was sued for fraud and the case was one of the major pushes for a video game reform act, that thankfully fell through.

Sorry, I’m a bit of a video game historian so I thought I should lay that out there

Also on the music, GTA V rivals Red Dead Redemption’s Jose Gonzalez moment with two of the best music choices in game history. I hope you talk about them when they happen. Spoiler free, one happens during a flying mission and the other when you drop an important character off. I can’t wait till you guys get to those missions.

Oh and if you are on a heist mission and the guy dies, you can pick up the money from them and keep all their profits (and not have to divvy up the take to the dead guy).

Sorry to ramble. I fucking love GTA games.

  5. Joseph Young says:

To me GTA is popular for 3 reasons.
1: It offers a fantasy outlet for base level urges, (action, adventure, etc.)
    2. It is a farce portraying the pitfalls of crime and why crime is stupid.
    3. It’s a brand, like Versace or Prada. People just want to be on the wagon.

If you can get that combo of Id, super ego, and effective brand marketing into any consumable product you will have a hit.

  6. Ryan says:

I heard this joke on the Bob and Tom radio show back when I was in high school, and I have no idea who the comedian was who said it, but it always made me laugh:

“I was homeless for awhile and I didn’t want anyone to find out, so I just slept in front of a ticketmaster”

  7. Joe says:

People who whine about spoilers are losers.

  8. onReload says:

    @ phil medoc –

I believe I read somewhere that you can (finally) make female soldiers in CoD: Ghosts.

  9. Post-Meister says:

Endor Kids!!!!!…….Seriously, Kumail needs a twitter handle like @thegynomite, even if he doesn’t have a blog.

  10. Noel says:

    Cheers for the great episode.

My only worry with GTA 5 is that the missions will be a bit too linear, where they say things like “Use this specific gun, wait for the target here and then shoot them and run away.”

I’d like to see them open that up a bit so instead you have a target and how you do it is entirely up to the player. To me it makes more sense in an open world game like GTA.

I’ll probably still be getting it but I’ll probably wait until it’s on PC.

  11. Al says:

I’m really enjoying this consistent flow of Monday podcast releases. One suggestion for future podcast guests would be to look into gaming industry equity analysts. Indoor Kids has explored the relationship between creativity and business in a rewarding fashion, and a whole episode devoted to industry dynamics could be very interesting.

I thought of the suggestion while watching the surprisingly verbose Michael Pachter, of Webush Morgan, video podcast on–when-will-current-gen-die-

  12. rhys says:

Regarding L.A. Noire, Take-Two (who owns Rockstar) has said in investor meetings that they consider L.A. Noire a franchise. Keep in mind, Rockstar takes a LONG time to develop their big games. GTA IV came out in 2008, so it took over five years for GTA V to come out. L.A. Noire only came out in 2011, so we could still see something on that. Also, it’s worth noting we haven’t even gotten a Red Dead Redemption sequel and that game was hugely successful. I also really liked L.A. Noire and would like to see more done with that franchise.

  13. Alec says:

It’s been a while since I read it, but I think the main character in The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect was a pain junk because of events that took place prior to the Singularity, not just because she was bored in paradise.

  14. phil medoc says:

Great episode, team! I’m not a GTA guy but you’re hard selling it. I think I’m gonna have to pick it up later — my backlog is just too crazy right now.

One thing: I do agree that, after five games, the fact that there isn’t a single female protagonist is kinda lame. I think it really does turn off a lot of potential players who are bored of playing as dudes all the time.

Incidentally, do any of the Call of Duty, Black Ops, etc games give the player the option to be a female soldier? I don’t play shooters, so I don’t know.

  15. Nichole says:

    -Kumail made skidmarks.

    -“Vagina-Awakening Ceremony”

-Conan on the Podcast would be awesome!
