America Has Officially Recognized How Awesome THE GOONIES and DIE HARD Are

As every fan knows, Goonies never say die. And now that very motto will live forever in the annals of America, because the classic kid’s action adventure is being enshrined this year in the National Film Registry. But it’s not going in alone, and yippee ki yay one of the movies joining it happens to be another one of our favorites too, because now Die Hard will be there too, ho ho ho.

In news we first came across at EW, the Library of Congress has announced the 25 newest films that are being recognized “for their cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance.” And make no mistake, being formally recognized as being an awesome and relevant movie is no small feat, since they note this now brings the total number of films that have earned this honorific to only 725 out of 1.3 million candidates. That works out to .056% of films.

This year’s crop covers nearly 100 years of film-making.

“Spanning the period 1905 to 2000, the films named to this year’s registry include Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts and independent and home movies.”

The other biggies on the list include the little known James Cameron movie Titanic, Superman: The Movie, Field of Dreams, Memento, and Spartacus. You can see the entire list below.

But while this makes it official, it’s not like we didn’t already know how great The Goonies and Die Hard are. What’s really important is this ensures future generations know we were smart enough to appreciate what we had.

Which of the movies on this year’s list is the most deserving? Name your worthiest film in our comments below
