THE BIG SICK Gives Us 4 More Minutes of Jokes in This Deleted Material Reel (Exclusive)

Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon‘s The Big Sick has been one of the sleeper hits of this year. We loved the pair’s semi-autobiographical romantic comedy when we first saw it at Sundance, and upon hitting theaters The Big Sick has since managed to pick up the support of critics and moviegoers alike. In the film, Nanjiani stars as a fictionalized version of himself, while Zoe Kazan plays Emily Gardner, a character inspired by Gordon. Nanjiani and Gordon’s real life courtship turned out to be rich with dramatic and comedic moments, most of which made it into the movie. But of course, there were a few bits that didn’t make it into the film. Thankfully, Amazon Studios is sharing some of those jokes with us now.

In a video called “The Other Stuff,” we get to enjoy nearly four minutes of unseen material featuring Nanjiani and Kazan, as well as costars Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Aidy Bryant, Anupam Kher, Adeel Akhtar, and Kurt Braunohler. Some of these lost jokes don’t play quite as well as the material we see in the final cut, while others actually manage to make the crew laugh uncontrollably from off-camera.

Because Nanjiani’s cinematic alter ego is also a comedian, many of the jokes in this clip revolve around his comedy. In perhaps the highlight of the video, Romano’s Terry Gardner (Emily’s dad) intentionally steps on his own joke about the importance of comedic timing. Similarly, Kher’s Azmat (Kumail’s father) also gets in on the act by attempting to give his son a gag for his set. In that case, it really is about the delivery of the joke, which only seems to work the first time that Azmat said it.
