SUPERGIRL Recap: Kevin Smith Directs ‘Supergirl Lives’

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers about the CW’s Supergirl. Proceed with caution if you aren’t caught up.

After a long eight-week hiatus, Supergirl is finally back with the highly anticipated episode directed by Kevin Smith. When we last caught up with Kara, Alex, and Mon-El last night, their lives had calmed down a bit. But as expected, it didn’t take long for limits, relationships, and abilities to be tested. There is a lot to get through, so let’s dive in.

Super Girl Lives 1

While we didn’t get to see much of James as Guardian, it’s clear by the brief scene at the beginning of the episode that he’s had time to hone his skills since we last saw him. Of course, Guardian’s improvement has only added to Kara’s boredom. She’s tired of stopping jewel robberies instead of saving people.

It’s that boredom that led Kara to take the first case she could get her hands on: finding a missing teen. After a worried mother showed up at CatCo looking for help to get the word out about her daughter Izzy (played by Harley Quinn Smith), Kara jumped at the opportunity to save an actual person.

When Kara reached out to Maggie for some help on the case, she told her that there’s been an increase in abductions. The only problem is that NCPD hasn’t been able to figure out how they’re all connected. Luckily, Winn was able to track down how they’re all related, leading Kara and Mon-El—who wanted to tag along for the fun of it—to a clinic.

Supergirl Lives 3

When the super pair showed up, the doctor on call was more than happy to take the young pair back to the new medical trial he was working on. In this case, “medical trial” is a loose term that means sending carbon life forms through to a slaver planet in outer space. You know, just another normal Monday night in National City. After the doctor opened the portal and hopped through it, Kara followed suit, determined to save Izzy.

Despite being told to stay behind and get help, Mon-El followed Supergirl through the portal and landed on another planet. The bad news? Their powers don’t work on the planet. After finding out that the residents have been abducting Earthlings and selling them into slavery, the duo realize the only way to get to Izzy and the rest of the people is to surrender to the slavers. What they weren’t expecting was to find Roulette at the head of the operation.

Though captured alongside the rest of the folks she was trying to save, Kara remained positive and tried to convince the group (and probably herself) that she was going to get them all out of there. So when Roulette, the doctor, and the rest of their goons showed up, Kara and the rest of the group decided to fight back.

Supergirl Lives 2

Just as Supergirl is leading everyone to danger, Alex and the DEO (even Winn tagged along and got in on the action) figured out how to get through the portal and ended up on the planet. The two groups eventually reunite and start to head back through the portal. When one of the slavers grabbed Izzy, Alex tossed a solar energy bomb Kara’s way and she gained her powers back and saved the teen once and for all.

As soon as they’re safe on earth, Kara destroyed the portal, put her “disguise” glasses back on, and reunited Izzy with her mother. That wasn’t the only reunion, however; Alex and Maggie made up after a brief spat they had earlier in the episode. When Alex explained that the reason she pushed her away was because Supergirl was missing, Maggie saw right through her and told her that she knew the real reason she was out of sorts is because Supergirl is her sister. Alas, we’ve found the first person who identified Kara, despite her super secret disguise glasses. A+ Maggie!

At the end of the episode, Mon-El paid Kara a visit and told her he wanted to become a superhero like her (cape and all). With a mysterious group of hooded figures hunting Mon, and others bowing and letting him leave for some strange reason, things are getting interesting.
