A New Super Mario Bros. Speed Run Record Has Been Achieved

When a game like Super Mario Bros. has been around for 30-plus years, and with gamers being as obsessed with figuring out every single thing about a game like they are, you’d figure there wouldn’t be anything new to discover. nor should there be any records left to beat. In fact, we’d all assumed the previous record for beating Super Mario Bros. in a speed run was the fastest possible time achievable by human beings, short of hacking the code somehow.

But now, in today’s Nerdist News Edition, we have to crown a new self-professed “most clutch gamer alive.” He goes by the name of Kosmic, and even he can’t seem to believe his own achievement, despite practicing for 30 minutes on a new technique that could shave .35 seconds of his time. Having previously tied the old record of 4 minutes, 56.245 seconds, he found the new tactic got him down to 4 minutes and 55 seconds: a world record.

There are computers programmed to time the controls just right that have done it in 4:54, but that wasn’t supposed to be possible for a human. Kosmic might just be that close to becoming a super-cyborg.

If you want to watch the stream of his speedrun, it’s right here:

We hate to think how sore his fingers must be after all that. Judging by his elation, though, it’s totally worth it.

Jessica Chobot revels in our video just how long it took her to beat the game–so what was your best time? Let us know with a comment below.
