See Studio Ghibli Characters in Real World Settings

There is a great deal to love about Studio Ghibli films and the work of Hayao Miyazaki. Each and every film he’s done manages to introduce us to extraordinary characters, creatures, and concepts while still remaining grounded in some semblance of the real world. The reason for this is nothing new, as most Miyazaki fans will point to the incredible detail given to the environments in the films. However, it’s never been so clear to us until watching this video that overlays popular Ghibli characters on top of real life video footage.

The video Studio Ghibli in Real Life has been on Vimeo for nearly a year and we’re kicking ourselves for not noticing it sooner. But thanks to a recent post on RocketNews24, we can now bask in its awesomeness.

The project was created by “Kojer” from Seoul, South Korea and consists of incredibly well-placed Ghibli characters in real world video segments and the result is… well.. it’s a bit odd. Not because it’s done poorly (it’s not–it’s gorgeous) but we would have figured that it’d be easy to tell animation and IRL video apart. It isn’t. If anything, this is a testament to the immense detail given to the worlds in Miyazaki films. They’re always hyper-realistic and as occasionally cluttered as you’d expect real life to be.

Frankly, we’re smitten with how cool this video is and wish it was longer. We have our fingers crossed we’ll see Catbus zip by us during our commutes or Totoro floating across the sky. Though we’d probably be fine without No-Face devouring everything in sight.

What do you think of Studio Ghibli in Real Life? What’s your favorite part? Let’s discuss in the comments below.
