John Boyega is Deadly Serious in New IMPERIAL DREAMS Trailer

It seems that the characters John Boyega portrays on the big screen can’t help but be born into one type of brutal tyranny or another…

Now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens officially holds the title of highest-grossing domestic release in U.S. history, chances are you’ve heard of First Order Stormtrooper designation FN-2187, a.k.a. “Finn,” as well as John Boyega, the actor who brought the TRAITOR! to life. But before he was in one of the biggest box-office busters of all time, British-born Boyega lent his stellar acting chops to a much different kind of character for a much different kind of film. Not Attack the Block (which was also awesome), but rather Imperial Dreams, which just debuted its first trailer (below).

Imperial Dreams is about Bambi (Boyega), a young Los Angeles man fresh out of prison, who has to figure out a way to support himself, his son, and his dreams of being a writer. Unfortunately, with his son’s mother still in prison, and difficulty finding a job, the newly freed Bambi is once again forced to consider unlawful means for making ends meet.

The trailer showcases the raw, gritty tone of the drama, as well as what looks like a spectacularly heartfelt and nuanced performance by Boyega. The film, which was directed by Malik Vitthal (Watts and Volts), debuted at Sundance in 2014, where it received critics’ praise as well as the Best of Next Audience Award.

Unfortunately, Imperial Dreams has yet to procure distribution, but seeing as how Boyega is now a household name, chances are that’s going to change faster than the intentions of a Jedi-mind-tricked Stormtrooper. All we know for certain is that John Boyega was “raised to do one thing”—act.

What do you think about the trailer for Imperial Dreams? Are you happy to see Boyega take on a much grittier role, or is it Finn for the win all the way? Let us know in the comments section below!
